Weather Alert: Cold Conditions Prompt Health Warnings Across the UK

On Christmas Day, a cold health warning and weather advisories were issued for various regions in the UK, as meteorologists dampened expectations for a snowy holiday. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has placed a yellow alert for south-west England, effective from 18:00 on December 25 until noon on December 27.

The Met Office also issued a yellow warning for wind, impacting south-west England, Somerset, and a substantial portion of Wales, extending from cities such as Cardiff and Swansea up to Bangor. Early Thursday, Berry Head in Torbay registered wind gusts reaching 68 mph (109 km/h).

Event Disruptions and Condition Reports

Due to the adverse weather, some Christmas and Boxing Day swimming events in Devon and Cornwall were canceled. Despite this, around 400 swimmers bravely participated in The Serpentine in London’s Hyde Park, with approximately 100 competitors entering the annual Peter Pan Cup race. Winner Dave Bill described his victory as a „real honor,“ noting, „Swimming in the cold water is one of the most rewarding things. It calms my nervous system.“

The Met Office issued warnings affecting 18 of Wales‘ 22 council areas. On Christmas morning in south-west England, temperatures ranged from 1C to 4C (34F to 39F), but wind chill made it feel colder than freezing.

Forecast and Potential Impacts

According to meteorologist Matt Taylor, coastal winds have surpassed 40 mph, with peaks recorded at 43 mph in Plymouth and 49 mph in Liscombe, Exmoor. Met Office representative Oli Claydon commented on the low likelihood of a white Christmas, stating that a very dry weather pattern is expected across the UK for the upcoming days.

In Jersey, a crown dependency not officially part of the UK, snow was reported for the third time in history on Christmas Day, marking the first snowfall on the holiday since 1970.

The UKHSA warned that low temperatures may lead to minor health impacts, including increased healthcare usage by vulnerable individuals and heightened risks to their safety. Winds shifting from east to north-east are predicted to strengthen throughout Christmas Day, with gusts hitting 45-55 mph generally and between 55-65 mph in exposed coastal areas and prominent hills.

Rail travel may face disruptions, and power supplies could be affected, due to strong winds creating large waves that pose additional hazards along some coastlines. The highest anticipated temperatures for Christmas Day are around 7C (45F) in north-east England and 6C in south or south-east England.

Frost and freezing temperatures are also expected in rural areas of the west overnight into Boxing Day, with potential lows of -6C in rural Scotland and -4C in rural Wales. Consequently, organizers for the Coverack swim in Cornwall deemed the conditions „too dangerous“ and postponed the event to New Year’s Day. In Devon, Start Bay Inn expressed regret over the cancellation of its Boxing Day swim, emphasizing safety as a primary concern.
