West Midlands and London Northwestern Railways Win Prestigious Award
Two railway companies have been honored as the train operator of the year at an annual business awards ceremony.
West Midlands Railway (WMR) and London Northwestern Railway (LNR), which have collectively invested £1 billion in new trains, equipment, and facilities, received this accolade at the 2026 Rail Business Awards.
Earlier this February, both services became part of the newly established publicly owned entity, Great British Railways, which will oversee the daily operations of trains, as well as manage infrastructure, tracks, and signaling.
Ian McConnell, managing director of both companies, expressed his pride in the achievement, stating that the award reflects the dedication and effort of their employees.
Investment in Modernization and New Services
A significant portion of the investment has been allocated to the introduction of new electric trains on routes such as the Cross City Line, recognized as the busiest commuter line outside of London, and on the West Coast Main Line for services connecting to London Euston.
Additionally, enhancements have been made to various depots, including upgrades in Birmingham, Coventry, Worcester, and Shrewsbury. Unfortunately, multiple rail incidents have caused train travel chaos across South London.
