Footfall in London's West End reached its highest level since 2020 over the 2025 festive season, new figures show.
The Heart of London Business Alliance (HOLBA) reported that visitor numbers in December increased by 19 percent compared to December 2024 across its central London district.
Visitor Engagement
The area, which encompasses Piccadilly, Leicester Square, and Haymarket, also noted longer visits, with individuals staying an average of 42 minutes more than in December 2024.
The alliance emphasized that these statistics indicate a robust recovery from the impacts of the Covid pandemic and highlight the burgeoning significance of the West End's experience economy.
Comparative Data Insights
According to the data, footfall in December 2025 was 20 percent above the average recorded between 2022 and 2024. Notably, between December 15 and 29, visits were 35 percent higher than the post-pandemic average.
The average dwell time across the district climbed to two hours and 38 minutes, with the most significant increases observed on Sundays and Mondays.
Economic Contributions
While the HOLBA district represents about 12 percent of the overall West End, it contributes over £12.8 billion to the UK economy, supports more than 117,000 jobs, and attracts approximately 83 million visitors annually, as stated by the organization.
Mark Williams, deputy chief executive of HOLBA, remarked, “Today’s figures show that London’s West End continues to outperform national trends, with visitor numbers on the rise. This underscores its appeal as a global destination and the power of the experience economy in attracting people to the area.”
Challenges Ahead
Despite the positive trends, Williams noted that challenges remain due to increasing business rates and operating costs.
Simon Thomas, executive chairman at The Hippodrome Casino, added, “What matters most is the bigger picture though. This peak period showed that, even in challenging times, the West End remains one of the capital’s great economic and cultural engines.”
