Thousands of students eager to reconnect with their classmates after the holiday break will experience delays.
Numerous schools remain shuttered across various regions in England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland due to the ongoing cold snap.
The northeast of Scotland is reportedly experiencing some of the most extreme conditions seen in the past 15 years, according to our dedicated team in Scotland.
A yellow warning for snow and ice is currently in effect across the northern part of Scotland and will continue until midnight tonight. Similar alerts are also issued for the northeast of England, East Midlands, Yorkshire, as well as the southwest of England and segments of Wales.
Travel Disruptions Reported
The severe weather is leading to significant travel disruptions, with Liverpool John Lennon Airport forced to close its runway, which is currently covered in ice.
City of Derry Airport is also facing closures, and numerous flights have been cancelled at Belfast International Airport.
Train services are similarly affected, with Network Rail Scotland cautioning that “heavy and drifting snow” has halted some operations.
Emergency Services Respond
In Wales, emergency responders are assisting motorists stranded in the snow, while bus services have been suspended due to “atrocious” driving conditions.
Conversely, some individuals are taking advantage of the winter landscape; a group was observed playing ice hockey on a frozen, flooded field in Upware, Cambridgeshire, while another was seen ice skating nearby.
