What changes are being proposed for Croydon’s neighborhoods and streets? The local council is looking to implement additional planning regulations aimed at safeguarding areas with notable architectural or historical significance.
Croydon Council is contemplating the establishment of several new conservation areas to help maintain the borough’s character and promote local pride. There are nine neighborhoods and streets identified for potential conservation status, recognized for their historical or architectural merit.
Identified Areas for Conservation
The list includes Sanderstead Village, London Road, and the Whitgift Estate, among others. Each of these sites represents the „remarkable diversity“ of Croydon’s rich heritage, as stated by the council.
Executive Mayor Jason Perry remarked, „Croydonians are rightly proud of the unique character of the many different neighborhoods that make up our borough. Our architecture and our public spaces tell the story of our rich history and evolution, from a medieval market town to the economic powerhouse of South London, linking the coast and the capital.“ He further explained that this initiative aims not only to protect but also to enhance local spaces through regeneration and design improvement.
Next Steps in the Process
Following this announcement, there will be further research and evaluation of the proposed areas based on national, local, and Historic England criteria. Residents will be encouraged to express their opinions on which neighborhoods should officially receive conservation area status.
If designated, these areas will be subject to enhanced planning regulations, influencing individuals looking to make alterations to the exteriors of their properties. This review aligns with Mayor Perry’s commitment to incorporate residents‘ feedback regarding planning and the protection of Croydon’s unique characteristics, as outlined in the Mayor’s Business Plan for 2022-2026.
Since the late 1960s, Croydon has established 21 conservation areas, each varying in character and focus.
