What Safety Measures Are Being Implemented After Disturbing Incidents at Travelodge?

A woman has shared her harrowing experience of being confined in her Travelodge hotel room for an hour last summer while a naked man pounded on her door and engaged in „vile“ sexual acts in the hallway. Wendy Griffith is among a growing number of guests who feel that the hotel chain has not adequately addressed alarming incidents over the years and has been consistently dismissive of their concerns.

Numerous individuals have come forward with their accounts after a report revealed how a woman was sexually assaulted in her bed at the Maidenhead branch of Travelodge in 2022, following staff mistakenly providing the assailant with a key card and her room number.

A spokesperson for Travelodge expressed deep regret regarding Wendy Griffith’s experience. Earlier this week, Travelodge’s CEO, Jo Boydell, extended apologies to those who have encountered „frightening“ situations.

Wendy Griffith’s Disturbing Encounter

Wendy Griffith, a marketing consultant from Norfolk, was staying at the Travelodge London Stratford in July 2025 when a man began banging on her door. Through the peephole, she witnessed him performing sexual acts, which led to a „rising panic“ as she felt „essentially trapped“ in her room during the night.

Struggling to contact hotel staff multiple times without success, she resorted to using her mobile phone to call the Travelodge website number, as there was no room phone or emergency contact number available. In desperation, she dialed 999.

„The police were incredible,“ she recounted. „Given I was a female staying in a hotel room on my own, three cars pulled up within five minutes to arrest the man.“

The man, identified as Trevor Reece, 40, pleaded guilty to outraging public decency in September 2025. He was sentenced to four months of alcohol dependency treatment and ordered to pay £185 in court costs and £50 in compensation to his victim, which she claims has yet to be received.

Psychological Impact and Response from Travelodge

Wendy Griffith expressed the psychological toll the incident has taken on her, stating, „The impact that has resulted in terms of the psychological impact, the flashbacks, the impact to my business, my livelihood, all of it, and my situation was not as extreme as the lady in the Travelodge Maidenhead hotel.“

She revealed that during a lull in the hour she was targeted, she learned that her assailant had approached the reception to request a replacement room key, mistakenly providing her room number instead of his own. „That moment when the desk clerk said ‚he asked for a key to your room‘ the blood drained from my body,“ she recalled.

Griffith criticized Travelodge’s handling of her complaints, stating that their responses were „categorically not good enough“ and that she felt „dismissed“ and „palmed off.“ She noted that no one from Travelodge proactively offered her a refund, forcing her to pursue the matter herself, only to have her case pushed to the company’s insurers, who denied liability.

„To take so long to respond,“ she said, „and now only under media scrutiny and pressure and the fact that their business looks bad.“

She emphasized that any incident involving police intervention should automatically escalate to the CEO for a formal investigation.

Travelodge’s Commitment to Improvement

A Travelodge spokesperson stated, „We were deeply sorry to hear about the distressing experience Ms. Griffith had at our London Stratford hotel and our handling of her case.“ The company has since implemented training across all hotels to ensure that the hotel phone number is included on every key card wallet provided to customers.

As concerns over guest safety at Travelodge continue to mount, a growing number of Members of Parliament have called for improved safety protocols within the hotel chain. Many guests have reported feeling „terrified“ by strangers entering their rooms and have provided evidence of their complaints to Travelodge and direct emails to its CEO.

Guest Experiences Highlight Safety Concerns

Guests have described Travelodge’s responses as „lacking,“ „dismissive,“ and „appalling.“ One guest recounted experiencing three room key errors in a single night.

Charlotte Bingley, from Birmingham, checked into a Travelodge in February and was confronted by an „intimidating“ staff member who entered her room without knocking. „I’ve never been so scared in my life,“ she said, recalling her fear that he might harm her. She described the company’s response to her complaints as „despicable.“

A Travelodge spokesperson acknowledged the inappropriateness of their response to Bingley, stating that the staff member involved has since been dismissed. „Any case of unauthorized access to a guest’s room is a significant cause for concern and what happened to Ms. Bingley was very upsetting and shouldn’t have happened,“ they added.

Further Incidents and Guest Reactions

Gordon Hollingsworth from Essex reported a stranger entering his and his wife’s room at the Travelodge Leatherhead in January. He described the unknown man as being just as shocked as he was, having been given the key to their room by hotel staff. Hollingsworth expressed his discontent with Travelodge’s response, stating that they merely glossed over the incident without implementing measures to prevent future occurrences.

Sophia Farley from Bournemouth also expressed dissatisfaction with Travelodge’s handling of her complaints regarding „dark figures“ appearing in her room at the London Belvedere in June 2025. She emphasized that the initial response from customer service minimized what she considered a significant safeguarding failure.

„My first thought was, if that happened years ago, why did that then happen to me?“

Farley noted that while her experience was not as severe as that of the victim in the Maidenhead incident, it could have been. Travelodge later apologized to her and processed a full refund at her request.

Calls for Accountability and Change

In light of the increasing number of reported safety issues, Wendy Griffith feels a sense of responsibility to speak out. „If this many incidents are occurring of reported cases, what is not being reported because women are too afraid to come forward?“ she questioned.

Griffith is seeking compensation not only for herself but also for other victims, aiming to ensure that such incidents do not happen to other women. She received a „profound and sincere apology“ from the manager of Travelodge London Stratford, and her advocacy for improvements led to the hotel printing a staff contact number on its key card holders.

A Travelodge spokesperson confirmed that they have commissioned an independent review to examine all aspects of their room security procedures. In the meantime, they have strengthened their room access policy and introduced additional training for staff.

„Our focus remains on ensuring that everyone feels safe when staying in our hotels,“ the spokesperson stated.
