The finalists for the Art Fund Museum of the Year award, which includes a £120,000 prize, have been announced. The nominees are Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery, the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, The Box in Plymouth, the National Gallery, and V&A East Storehouse, both located in London. This award is considered one of the most significant accolades in the museum sector worldwide.
According to Art Fund director Jenny Waldman, the shortlisted museums have demonstrated „extraordinary creativity and innovation.“ She expressed hope that the announcement would encourage individuals to visit not only the finalists but also their local museums.
„From opening up world-leading collections to connecting with communities of all ages through ambitious exhibitions and programmes, each one offers something special,“ Waldman stated. „We are thrilled to celebrate their achievements as finalists.“
Norwich Castle Museum and Art Gallery recently reopened after a five-year redevelopment, positioning itself as the UK’s most accessible castle. The museum aims to provide an authentic representation of life in the 12th century.
The Box, which marked its fifth anniversary in September, serves as a museum, gallery, and archive that highlights the history of Plymouth. It has become a cultural hub for the port city.
The winner of the Art Fund Museum of the Year will be revealed on June 25 at a ceremony held at the Cutty Sark in London. Each of the other four finalists will receive £20,000 as part of the recognition for their contributions to the museum sector.
This prestigious prize is supported by Art Fund members who purchase a National Art Pass, along with other supporters of the organization’s initiatives. Last year’s award was given to Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, located near Stanley in County Durham.
Among the finalists, the National Gallery stands out as a prominent institution, recognized for its extensive collection of European paintings.
For those interested in the arts and culture, this year’s nominees reflect a diverse range of exhibitions and community engagement efforts, showcasing the vital role museums play in society.
