Will London finally experience milder weather after Storm Goretti?

London is experiencing a rise in temperatures following a week of severe cold and snowfall caused by Storm Goretti, which has been labeled a ‚weather bomb.‘ Although the storm wreaked havoc across much of the UK, London avoided any significant weather warnings.

This winter storm was the first major one of the year, bringing record winds and heavy snowfall to various regions. Even though London managed to escape the most severe impacts, temperatures in the capital plummeted to lows of -8°C earlier in the week, creating icy conditions on roads and pavements.

Upcoming Weather Changes

As of Sunday morning (January 11), Londoners can expect a slight increase in temperature, with highs reaching 8°C. For many, this change will feel quite pleasant compared to the frigid temperatures of recent days. However, residents should remain cautious, as intermittent rain and wind will continue to contribute to a chilly atmosphere. It is prudent to carry an umbrella and consider replacing heavier outerwear with waterproof alternatives.

Looking ahead to Monday, January 12, temperatures are anticipated to rise further to about 11°C. However, heavier rain is forecasted throughout the day, with scattered showers expected to persist. Following another rainy day on Tuesday, January 13, the Met Office suggests conditions will become „much milder,“ with a reduced likelihood of precipitation as the week progresses. Nevertheless, temperatures may dip again before the following weekend.

Weather Warnings and Forecast

Earlier this week, Met Office forecaster Craig Snell clarified why London did not receive a weather warning prior to the storm. He noted that the service provides alerts only for areas expected to experience disruptions due to snow, rather than merely areas where snow may fall. He further explained, „The reason why the snow warning stops just to the north and west of London is all down to the battle between the cold air currently across the UK and milder air trying to come in from the Atlantic.“ While London enjoys milder conditions, parts of Northern England and Scotland remain under snow and ice warnings from the Met Office.

Residents should remain vigilant about potentially slippery surfaces on untreated pavements as the remnants of ice from this week continue to thaw.
