The Wireless Festival has been called off after the UK government denied rapper Kanye West entry into the country.
The decision came after significant public backlash regarding West’s scheduled performance at the London festival this summer.
West, who has faced criticism for a series of antisemitic, racist, and pro-Nazi remarks over the years, was informed that his request for an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) was rejected.
In an official statement, Wireless Festival announced, „The Home Office has withdrawn YE’s ETA, denying him entry into the United Kingdom. As a result, Wireless Festival is cancelled and refunds will be issued to all ticket holders.“
The festival organizers added, „As with every Wireless Festival, multiple stakeholders were consulted in advance of booking YE and no concerns were highlighted at the time. Antisemitism in all its forms is abhorrent, and we recognize the real and personal impact these issues have had. As YE said today, he acknowledges that words alone are not enough, and in spite of this still hopes to be given the opportunity to begin a conversation with the Jewish community in the UK.“
Government’s Decision and Reactions
The Home Office stated that West’s application for travel was submitted on Monday, but the refusal was based on the assessment that his presence would not be conducive to the public good.
A representative from Campaign Against Antisemitism remarked, „The government has clearly made the right decision here. For once, when it said that antisemitism has no place in the UK, it backed up its words with action. Someone who has boasted of making tens of millions of dollars from selling swastika T-shirts and who released a song called Heil Hitler just months ago clearly would not be conducive to the public good in the UK.“
The organization further criticized the festival’s initial decision to invite West, stating, „Wireless Festival, in its desperate quest for profit, defended the invitation until the end. That is shameful, and its sponsors should continue to stay away.“
Kanye West’s Response
Earlier on Tuesday, West expressed a desire to meet with members of the Jewish community in the UK amid the controversy surrounding his booking. In a statement, the artist, now known as Ye, said he had been „following the conversation around Wireless“ and offered to meet community representatives in person „to listen.“
„I know words aren’t enough,“ he added. „I’ll have to show change through my actions. If you’re open, I’m here.“
A spokesperson for the Board of Deputies of British Jews stated that neither their organization nor the Jewish Leadership Council had declined any request to meet with Wireless Festival organizers. They noted, „When the Board of Deputies received a letter from Melvin Benn on 6 April, proposing to meet, in response to a letter we sent setting out our concerns, we responded positively. In any event, we are clear that the invitation to Kanye West to perform should be rescinded.“
Impact on Festival and Industry Figures
The decision regarding West’s performance is now out of the hands of both the artist and Festival Republic, the company responsible for Wireless, as well as other prominent UK festivals such as Reading and Leeds.
Melvin Benn, managing director of Festival Republic, had hinted at the potential cancellation of West’s appearance during an interview on BBC Radio 4, stating, „It may be that the home secretary does rescind his visa… if she does, the issue is over.“
Benn, a notable figure in the UK music industry, acknowledged the rapper’s past behavior as „abhorrent“ and „disgusting,“ but also emphasized the importance of considering West’s mental health challenges. He remarked, „Mental health is not something that disappears overnight. People suffer psychotic behavior, suffer bipolar behavior, for many, many years… And I think people are forgetting that.“
Criticism from Jewish Groups
Jewish organizations have criticized Benn’s support for West, with the Board of Deputies of British Jews stating that his position would not reassure many within the Jewish or other communities. They pointed out, „It has been less than a year since Kanye West released a song entitled Heil Hitler, the culmination of three years of appalling antisemitism. He also made a number of deeply offensive comments about the black community, saying that the 400-year experience of slavery was ‚like a choice.'“
The Board expressed willingness to meet West as part of his journey of healing, but only if he agrees not to perform at the Wireless Festival this year.
Political Reactions
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer previously condemned West’s booking, stating, „Antisemitism in any form is abhorrent and must be confronted firmly wherever it appears.“
Health Secretary Wes Streeting echoed these sentiments, labeling West’s apology as „mealy-mouthed and self-serving,“ and accused Wireless of providing the rapper with a „fig leaf of credibility.“ He remarked, „If he wants forgiveness, it’s not my forgiveness he needs. It’s the forgiveness of the Jewish communities, and I don’t think he’s done anything to earn it.“
Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp also criticized West, describing him as „guilty of appalling antisemitic and pro-Nazi comments“ and urged Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood to use her powers under the Immigration Act to deny him a visa. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey and Reform UK leader Nigel Farage have also called for West to be barred from entering the UK.
For those who had planned to attend the festival, refunds will be processed for all ticket holders.
