With six million voters and over 1,800 councillors across 32 boroughs, the upcoming local elections in London on May 7, 2026, are poised to be among the most complex in the city’s history.
Every council in the capital will hold elections to determine leadership for the next four years. The traditional dominance of Labour, the Conservatives, and the Liberal Democrats is increasingly uncertain, as new contenders emerge.
The rise of Reform UK on the right and the Green Party on the left introduces significant challenges to the established political landscape. Additionally, the Aspire Party, which governs Tower Hamlets, and a growing number of independent candidates suggest that London’s political framework could undergo a substantial transformation.
Post-election, it is conceivable that five or even six parties could be in control of various councils throughout London, marking a departure from the previous Labour stronghold, which currently oversees 21 boroughs.
„Entering a new era“
For the first time, both Reform UK and the Green Party are expressing optimism about their prospects not only for securing seats but also for potentially taking control of councils.
Reform UK is focusing on councils along the Kent and Essex borders, targeting areas such as Bromley, Bexley, and Havering. Party insiders view these elections as a strategic move to establish a foothold in London ahead of the mayoral election scheduled for 2028.
„If we can win in London,“ one insider remarked, „we can win anywhere.“
Meanwhile, the Green Party is particularly enthusiastic about their chances in Hackney, with party members and political analysts alike noting the momentum gained from their recent parliamentary by-election victory in Gorton and Denton.
„People know a Green vote isn’t a wasted vote; it can change things,“ a party representative stated.
They are also eyeing the mayoral race in Lewisham, and after securing only 18 councillors across 32 boroughs in 2022, it is plausible that they could achieve similar numbers in individual councils following the May elections.
„It looks like London is entering a new era in its local politics,“ said Professor Tony Travers from the London School of Economics.
He added, „If the splintering of votes reflects the polling trends, the governance map of this city will be unlike anything seen before.“
Travers emphasized that while these are local elections, many voters may cast their ballots based on national issues and their perceptions of the traditional major parties.
Current Political Landscape
At present, Labour maintains a stronghold in London, with 59 of the capital’s 75 MPs and control over 21 councils, a record-equalling high. The Conservatives, on the other hand, manage only five councils, having lost their previously dominant councils of Wandsworth and Westminster to Labour in the last borough elections in 2022.
The Liberal Democrats govern three councils in south-west London and are aiming to gain Merton from Labour.
The Aspire Party continues to lead in Tower Hamlets, while two boroughs remain under no overall control.
Nick Bowes, insight director at the London Communications Agency, remarked, „These elections are likely to be the most consequential in London for the past 20 years, possibly since the first borough elections in 1964.“
He further noted, „Given the fragmentation evident in the polls, predicting the outcomes is challenging, but it appears to be a potentially difficult night for both Labour and the Conservatives in London.“
A New Political Landscape
If predictions hold true, London could face a radically different political environment once the votes are counted. This shift could result in the election of hundreds of new councillors who will need to acclimate to the workings of local governance.
Council administrators, accustomed to dealing with a single dominant party, may need to navigate the complexities of managing five or six-party coalitions. Additionally, neighboring boroughs that previously collaborated due to shared party leadership may need to forge new alliances.
A Labour mayor, traditionally working with predominantly Labour councils, will now have to engage with a diverse array of political factions.
The upcoming elections promise to be anything but mundane.
