AI Impact: Sadiq Khan Warns of Job Losses in London Without Regulation

What are the implications of uncontrolled artificial intelligence on employment in London? Sir Sadiq Khan has raised alarms regarding AI potentially becoming „a weapon of mass destruction of jobs“ if not effectively regulated.

During his annual address at Mansion House, the mayor emphasized the necessity for immediate measures to maximize AI’s benefits while avoiding a crisis of mass unemployment. He remarked that London stands at the forefront of significant transformation due to AI’s „colossal“ influence on critical sectors such as finance, professional services, and creative industries.

Call to Action

Khan articulated that AI has the potential to enhance public services and address serious issues such as cancer treatment and climate change. However, he warned that if utilized irresponsibly, it could lead to increased unemployment, heightened inequality, and an unprecedented concentration of wealth and power.

„We mustn’t drift, absentmindedly, into a future we didn’t ask for and don’t want,“ Khan stated. He urged for a decisive choice: harness the transformative power of AI for positive outcomes or allow it to become a destructive force for employment.

Worker Concerns

A survey conducted by City Hall in November revealed that 56% of London employees anticipate AI will affect their jobs within the coming year. Khan expressed concerns that without proactive intervention, job losses might outpace the creation of new opportunities, particularly affecting entry-level positions and denying young individuals crucial first steps in their careers.

The mayor announced the formation of a task force, comprising experts from government, education, and the AI sector, to evaluate the situation and identify strategies for supporting London’s workforce in the future. Findings from this review are expected by summer, and Khan also mentioned plans for his office to provide free AI training to all London residents.

Urgency of Action

Khan underscored the importance of rapid action, citing research indicating that 70% of skills required in the average job will evolve by 2030. A spokesperson from No 10 confirmed efforts to train 7.5 million workers—about one-fifth of the UK’s workforce—with essential AI skills in the coming years.

„In April, we will launch new short courses for businesses focusing on AI and digital skills to equip individuals with the necessary tools for future employment,“ the spokesperson added.

This discussion arises amidst rising concerns related to the misuse of AI, such as the creation of sexualized deepfake imagery through AI technology.
