Chick-fil-A has officially opened its inaugural London location in Kingston, situated at 90 Eden St, London KT1 1JD. This new restaurant marks a significant milestone for the fast-food chain in the UK.
Grand Opening Festivities
During the grand opening, attendees were treated to complimentary samples of the restaurant’s homemade lemonade, a refreshing blend of lemons, sugar, and water. Guests could also indulge in Chick-fil-A’s Original Chick-fil-A® Chicken Sandwich, crafted from real, whole boneless chicken breast and hand-breaded daily. The menu features a variety of options, including signature hand-squeezed lemonade, milkshakes, freshly prepared salads, and grilled chicken selections.
This opening follows the successful launch of Chick-fil-A’s first locally owned and operated UK restaurant in Leeds last October. Despite being a vegetarian and hesitant about fast food in the morning, one guest sampled the chain’s waffle fries paired with the renowned Chick-fil-A sauce and a Cookies ’n Cream milkshake, describing the meal as delicious and satisfying.
Restaurant Features and Community Engagement
Located in the former HSBC bank building on Eden Street, the Kingston restaurant spans two floors. The ground floor features a spacious dining area and ordering counter, adorned with red flowers on each table—a hallmark of the chain. Notably, the sofas are embroidered with waffle fries, and some tables were crafted by ex-convicts as part of a rehabilitation initiative, a practice common across Chick-fil-A locations.
The Kingston restaurant will be fully operated by local staff, although some team members from the chain’s headquarters in Atlanta have traveled to assist in training. Chelsea Lee, a member of the US team, expressed excitement about the opening, stating, „We are thrilled to be here in Kingston and see so many people queueing up for the opening. We’re super excited to serve the people of Kingston.“
Local Leadership and Community Support
Connor Ashford has been appointed as the local Owner-Operator for the Kingston location. As an independent business owner, Ashford will oversee restaurant operations, recruit local talent, and forge partnerships with community organizations and charities. To contribute positively to the local community, Ashford will participate in the Chick-fil-A Shared Table program, which focuses on food donations to combat food insecurity.
In celebration of the restaurant’s opening, Chick-fil-A has donated £25,000 to Moving on Together, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals affected by addiction and hunger in the borough. Ashford remarked, „I’m so blessed to be in the restaurant and so excited to serve the people of Kingston. We have an amazing team and we’re really excited to have a long-lasting impact within the community.“
Protests Against Chick-fil-A
However, the opening was not without controversy. At 10 am on Thursday, human rights activist Peter Tatchell led a protest against Chick-fil-A, voicing concerns over the company’s alleged funding of organizations that oppose LGBTQ+ equality. Accompanied by supporters, including an individual dressed in a blow-up chicken costume, Tatchell criticized the company, stating, „Chick-fil-A is anti-gay.“
During the protest, Tatchell shared insights from his three-year campaign against the chain, urging those in line for the opening to reconsider their patronage. He stated, „We’re here outside Chick-fil-A in Kingston today to highlight the fact that this company helps fund organizations that oppose LGBTQ+ equality, including opposing same-sex marriage and supporting conversion practices to change a person’s sexuality or gender identity.“
Calls for Accountability
Tatchell emphasized the need for Chick-fil-A to provide assurances that it would cease funding anti-LGBTQ+ initiatives. He expressed frustration over the company’s lack of response to previous inquiries, stating, „We’ve asked this very simple question. Will you give assurance that in future, you won’t fund anti-LGBTQ+ campaigns? But they won’t even answer. So, we take that as a no and that they probably will fund those campaigns in the future.“
Operating Hours and Company Tradition
Chick-fil-A’s Kingston restaurant operates from 10 am to 10 pm, Monday through Saturday, and remains closed on Sundays. This practice is rooted in the company’s founding principles by Truett Cathy, who aimed to provide his team members with a day off to engage in personal pursuits, whether that be spending time with family or participating in worship.
As the Kingston community welcomes this new dining option, the restaurant’s impact on local culture and ongoing discussions surrounding its corporate practices will continue to unfold.
