The voice of the affected resonates strongly as a construction worker celebrates a remarkable win, having placed a bet based on a 62-year-old horse racing tip discovered in a time capsule in a south London park.
This time capsule, containing four vintage coins and a handwritten note, was unearthed during renovation work at Crystal Palace Park, located beneath a statue. The note, dated 1964, referenced winnings from a horse named Santa Claus and encouraged the finder to back a horse with a related name.
Site manager Josh Smalls, who relocated to London from County Armagh in Northern Ireland two years ago, acted on the anonymous tip and wagered £20 on a horse named Christmas Day. The horse triumphed with impressive 7-1 odds during the race held on Saturday.
„It was very exciting. I was like a child on Christmas Day. To find a piece of history like that – and for it to link up so well with the horse this year – it was kind of spooky,“ Smalls remarked before the Derby.
Smalls, who has a background in horse racing thanks to his uncle, a horse trainer, noted that he could not find any other horses with names related to Christmas in recent years.

After Christmas Day, trained by Aidan O’Brien and ridden by jockey Ronan Whelan, surged ahead in the final moments of the race, the Crystal Palace Park Trust took to social media to express their astonishment: „What just happened? The park’s time capsule prophecy came true.“
The note was discovered on April 15 by contractor Craciun Marius Dorin while workers were relocating the bust of Sir Joseph Paxton, a Victorian designer instrumental in the creation of Crystal Palace for the Great Exhibition of London in 1851.
„I’m Romanian and Craciun in Romanian actually means Christmas – isn’t that crazy?“ Dorin shared.
Upon finding the note, Dorin promptly handed it over to Smalls, who echoed his earlier sentiments about the excitement of the discovery. The connection between the historical note and the winning horse was indeed remarkable.

Bromley Mayor Christine Harris also joined in on the excitement by placing a £15 bet on Christmas Day, indicating that any potential winnings would be directed towards local charities.
