Andy Wedlake expressed his disappointment regarding the start of his honeymoon, which was marred by an unfortunate incident involving easyJet. The London couple, who had eagerly anticipated their trip to Tivat, Montenegro, found themselves separated due to an overbooked flight. The situation escalated when easyJet staff presented them with an ultimatum that forced Mrs. Wedlake to board the flight alone.
Flight Disruption and Separation
The couple had meticulously planned their honeymoon and arrived at Gatwick Airport’s North Terminal well ahead of their scheduled 8:25 a.m. flight on July 26. However, their excitement quickly turned to frustration when they encountered issues checking in online in the early hours. Upon arriving at the airport, they learned that the flight was overbooked.
“They had overbooked the flight,” Mr. Wedlake stated. “They could only give us seats once boarding had closed – and if other people didn’t turn up to the flight.”
Overbooking is a common practice in the airline industry, where more tickets are sold than available seats. According to air passenger rights regulations, airlines are required to first seek volunteers willing to take a later flight in exchange for compensation. At the departure gate, easyJet staff inquired if anyone would be willing to travel on the following morning’s flight. Mr. Wedlake noted that only one volunteer came forward, which opened up a single seat on the plane.
Unfortunate Ultimatum
Despite the couple’s expectation that they would both be accommodated on the next day’s flight, they were informed that only one of them could board. If neither claimed the available seat, they would both be classified as „no shows,“ forfeiting their rights to rebooking and compensation.
“They said that either my wife or I had to take that seat otherwise we would count as a ‘no show’ and would lose all rights for rebooking and any compensation,” Mr. Wedlake recounted. “So my wife got on the flight and I stayed behind.”
As Mrs. Wedlake flew alone to the Adriatic destination, Mr. Wedlake returned to their home in London. The couple was finally reunited in Montenegro after a separation of 21 hours.
Company Response and Compensation
An easyJet spokesperson expressed regret over the couple’s experience, acknowledging the difficulties it caused for their honeymoon. The spokesperson explained that overbooking occurs on a small percentage of flights and that the airline typically does not deny boarding. They emphasized that filling these seats helps maintain lower fares for all passengers.
“In the rare event a customer can’t travel, we take our responsibilities seriously and seek volunteers to travel on a later flight in exchange for compensation,” the spokesperson said. “Where this is not possible, a decision is made based on order of check-in.”
While the spokesperson noted that a seat was available for one passenger, they expressed regret that an exception was not made in this instance to allow both passengers to travel together, especially given the significance of the trip. The airline has since reached out to the Wedlakes to apologize and offer compensation.
Impact of the Experience
Mr. Wedlake is entitled to £350 in compensation under air passenger rights regulations due to being denied boarding. However, he expressed that this amount does not adequately compensate for the emotional distress and lost time spent apart from his wife.
“For me, that doesn’t cover the stress, the sadness of being apart from my new wife, the loss of one full day in Tivat, or the wasted time,” he remarked. “I understand easyJet’s terms and conditions allow them to do this kind of thing, but I’m shocked they do it to destinations where they only put on one flight per day – and that they would not be able to predict this flight on a Sunday morning in summer would have a high attendance rate.”
This incident highlights the challenges travelers face with airline policies, particularly regarding overbooking and the impact it can have on significant life events such as honeymoons.
