Passengers expressed their frustration and concern as a sudden runway closure at Gatwick Airport led to significant disruptions on Wednesday. Many travelers were left in limbo as flights were diverted or held in holding patterns due to the emergency situation.
On the day of the incident, nine flights bound for Gatwick declared emergencies after a British Airways aircraft from Palma de Mallorca blocked the runway. This unexpected event forced multiple inbound flights to either circle or reroute to alternative airports, impacting hundreds of passengers.
Flight Diversions and Emergency Protocols
Aircraft from popular vacation destinations, including Tenerife, Valencia, Lanzarote, Rhodes, Athens, Bari, Rome, and Agadir, were among those affected. The diverted flights were redirected to various airports, including London Luton, Stansted, Heathrow, and Birmingham.
According to Flightradar24, a total of 14 flights were either diverted or had to circle before Gatwick’s runway reopened around 1:30 AM. Nine of these flights declared a squawk 7700, the universal transponder code indicating a general in-flight emergency.
Passenger Experiences
The British Airways flight BA2673 from Palma de Mallorca landed at 12:10 AM and was met by fire and ground vehicles upon arrival. One passenger traveling from Tenerife shared their experience on social media, stating, „Still on the plane to see what’s happening next !! Hoping we can be flown back to Gatwick soon! It’s been much longer flight from Tenerife than usual.“
Although the British Airways flight was eventually removed from the runway, other flights continued to be rerouted while emergency services remained on site.
Airport Response and Safety Measures
Gatwick Airport later confirmed that the runway closure was due to a technical issue with the aircraft. A spokesperson for the airport stated, „Earlier this morning, the runway was closed for a short period due to a technical issue with an aircraft. As a result, a small number of flights were diverted, with the majority later returning to London Gatwick. As always, safety and security is our number one priority.“
