The response from emergency services has been swift following a significant fire near Stratford train and tube station, leading to widespread disruptions for commuters. Station Commander Scott Thorpe, present at the scene, confirmed that the blaze is situated in a grassy area surrounded by railway tracks, prompting immediate action from the London Fire Brigade.
According to the London Fire Brigade (LFB), eight fire engines and approximately 60 firefighters are currently engaged in battling the flames. The fire was reported around 19:00 BST, and by 20:45 BST, LFB noted that multiple areas of fire involving trees, shrubbery, and grass remain active.
Impact on Train Services
Train operator Greater Anglia announced that the incident necessitated the shutdown of power to the overhead electric wires, resulting in all lines being blocked through Stratford. In a statement, they advised passengers against traveling for the rest of the day.
National Rail reported that the Elizabeth line is suspended between Whitechapel and Shenfield, with numerous cancellations, alterations, and delays affecting their network. Additionally, London Overground routes are halted between Dalston Kingsland and Stratford, causing delays across the entire Mildmay line.
Broader Transport Disruptions
Further disruptions are evident on the Jubilee line, which is suspended between West Ham and Stratford due to the ongoing fire. The Docklands Light Railway has also ceased operations between Bow Church and Stratford. While the Central line continues to operate, trains are not stopping at Stratford station.
In a statement on social media, the LFB indicated that they are making steady progress in extinguishing the multiple fire locations but expect crews to remain on-site throughout the evening. Firefighters have also assisted the British Transport Police in evacuating passengers from several trains halted near the station.
The LFB received around 30 calls regarding the fire before 19:00 BST, prompting a rapid response from crews based in Plaistow, Poplar, Ilford, Bethnal Green, and other nearby fire stations. National Rail is actively providing updates and travel advice to passengers on their website, while Transport for London is also addressing the service disruptions.
