The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is currently examining an unusual outbreak of Legionnaires’ Disease in London, particularly affecting areas in North West and South West London.
As of March 23, 2026, there have been eight confirmed cases linked by the same bacterial sequence type, all involving individuals who either live, work, or have visited these regions. Additionally, 13 more cases are being investigated to ascertain any connections to the outbreak.
Investigation and Response Measures
An incident management team, which includes members from UKHSA, local authorities, and the Health and Safety Executive, is overseeing the epidemiological, microbiological, and environmental investigations. So far, no common exposure sites have been identified.
Authorities are actively tracing the movements of those affected and are assessing potential environmental water sources, such as cooling towers, which are frequently associated with Legionnaires’ Disease. Immediate control measures have involved site inspections, water sampling, and precautionary shock-dosing of cooling towers when deemed necessary.
Understanding Legionnaires’ Disease
Legionnaires’ Disease is a serious form of pneumonia caused by inhaling small droplets of water contaminated with Legionella bacteria. Common sources of the bacteria include poorly maintained air conditioning systems, showers, and taps. Symptoms of the disease may include:
- High fever
- Cough
- Shortness of breath
- Muscle aches
- Headaches
It is important to note that the disease is not typically transmitted from person to person, and the overall risk to public health is considered low.
In response to the outbreak, UKHSA has communicated with clinicians and hospital microbiologists nationwide to facilitate active case finding, clarify notification protocols, and guide diagnostic testing.
Ongoing investigations and case monitoring are in progress, with authorities stating that the situation regarding the outbreak is continuously being evaluated.
