How will the proposed modifications to bus routes influence housing projects in North London? Transport for London (TfL) is soliciting feedback from residents regarding alterations to five bus routes amidst plans for the construction of 10,000 new homes. These changes are part of a larger redevelopment initiative at the former industrial site of Meridian Water, aimed at addressing the pressing housing shortage in the region.
The consultation process remains open until February 23, allowing local citizens to voice their opinions on the planned revisions, which include routes 476, 341, 444, W8, and 192.
Proposed Route Adjustments
In response to the anticipated population increase, TfL suggests significant changes to enhance public transport accessibility. The proposed shift for the 476 route, which currently operates between King’s Cross and Northumberland Park, would extend it to include Meridian Water station and reach the end of the development near the North Circular Road.
This modification would result in the 341 route, which runs from Waterloo to Meridian Water, terminating earlier at Northumberland Park station. However, the new N341 will conclude at the same endpoint as the extended 476.
The 444 route, which connects Turnpike Lane and Chingford, would see a significant alteration if approved. Instead of maintaining its existing path along the North Circular, it would divert onto Conduit Lane, proceed to Meridian Water station, and then return to the North Circular after traversing the new housing development.
Additional Changes and Potential Impact
Furthermore, TfL is considering modifications to the termination points of both the W8 and 192 routes. The W8 route, previously ending at Lee Valley Athletics Centre, would now route right onto Montagu Road to terminate at Meridian Water, ultimately concluding at Tottenham Hale. Consequently, the 192 would adopt the current W8 course on Montagu Road, ending its service at Lee Valley Athletics Centre instead.
TfL acknowledges that these adjustments may not favor all commuters in North London. Passengers reliant on the 341 will need to transfer to reach their intended destinations, while certain bus stops adjacent to Meridian Water will no longer be serviced by the 444.
