What factors contribute to the evolving identity of a neighborhood? In West London, the transformation of the area known as Askew Road has led to its emergence as a vibrant community, often referred to as ‚Askew Village.‘
A Village Atmosphere Amid Urban Connectivity
Located in Shepherd’s Bush, Askew Road combines a quaint, village-like ambiance with easy access to Central London. The lively high street is now lined with independent shops, café spots, and dining options, appealing to families and young professionals. Previously known as Gaggle Goose Green, this area boasts a strong sense of community that has developed over time.
Long-term residents recall the neighborhood’s more challenging past. Sonya, who has resided on Askew Road for 28 years, remarked, „The area is great; it has a pleasant community, and it’s very green with lovely houses. Some of us are fortunate to have gardens.“ She added, „But this area used to be quite scuzzy. Now, it boasts interesting shops and cafés. While traffic remains an issue, the overall improvement is notable.“
Diverse Retail Environment and Community Spirit
Askew Road has gained acclaim for its variety of retailers and amenities. Visitors can explore a wide range of establishments, from patisseries and butchers to bookstores and specialty shops. Thomas Salihi, 26, a lifelong resident, pointed out, „I believe Shepherd’s Bush as a whole has definitely undergone gentrification over the years. Askew Road serves as a perfect example of that.“ He noted that the increase in privately owned businesses has positively impacted the community’s atmosphere.
Nithin Francs, 28, an employee at Parkway Greens supermarket, praised the area’s inviting environment. He stated, „The community truly feels like one large family—everyone is rooted here. The customers we serve are consistently friendly!“
A Blend of Historic Architecture and Green Spaces
The vicinity features numerous Victorian-era buildings and mansion blocks. Although many structures have been converted into flats, several original properties and impressive Georgian villas still stand. For those seeking outdoor areas, parks such as Acton Park, Wendell Park, and Ravenscourt Park provide ample opportunities for walks, picnics, and recreational activities.
Additionally, the neighborhood has become a favorite for dog owners. Many cafés offer special treats for pets, making the high street particularly appealing to animal lovers. Rishi Pabary, 47, who enjoyed a walk with his dog, mentioned, „Numerous places provide treats for dogs. We’ve gone to about eight different spots today for treats. Now, she eagerly leads us into shops just for that! It’s very welcoming here.“
Supportive Local Business Community
Lisa Corrigan, manager of Detour, a local brunch café, confirmed their pet-friendly policies. She stated, „We have dog treats available, and all the fluffy friends come to greet us.“ She also stressed the community’s supportive nature, saying, „The locals are very fond of our business, and we have many regulars who visit for coffee daily. Our brunch menu is quite popular.“ Lisa emphasized the solidarity among businesses, which contributes to a pleasant working environment.
Askew Road benefits from robust public transportation options, with Hammersmith, Goldhawk Road, Stamford Brook, and Ravenscourt Park stations providing convenient routes to Central London. The area has become increasingly attractive for families, illustrated by the establishment of local hairdressing and beauty salons by residents, including sisters Dannie and Carrie.
The Community’s Positive Trend
Carrie McInerney, 29, acknowledged the notable changes in Askew, saying, „It has improved significantly; it used to feel run-down, but now it’s referred to as Askew Village! Other areas in London are also on the rise at the moment.“ She highlighted the power of local word-of-mouth advertising, stating, „Our primary clients are mothers from nearby schools—everyone talks about us. Just today, a mother was referred to us through her children’s WhatsApp group. I truly enjoy being part of this community!“
With its combination of historic architecture, independent businesses, and abundant green spaces, Askew Road presents a unique blend of urban convenience and village-like charm.
