High-tech speed detection cameras that operate without flashing lights or requiring road markings are set to be tested in various locations across London as part of an initiative aimed at enhancing road safety.
These advanced cameras utilize cutting-edge 4D imaging radar technology, enabling them to monitor speeding vehicles across five lanes of traffic moving in both directions. In addition to speed, they can also assess distance, elevation, and direction.
The trial will take place at nine designated sites throughout London where speed limits are set at either 20 mph or 30 mph.
Transport for London (TfL) emphasized that this technological upgrade is essential for ensuring consistent enforcement of speed limits. The Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) has also expressed interest in addressing other issues, such as the illegal use of mobile phones by drivers.
According to TfL, the new system integrates a high-resolution camera with advanced sensor technology, making it more reliable and effective than traditional speed cameras, while also producing superior image quality.
Currently, most speed cameras are limited to detecting violations across three lanes of traffic in one direction.
Trial Locations and Objectives
The trial will encompass areas including Haringey, Tower Hamlets, Havering, Croydon, Hammersmith and Fulham, Brent, Hackney, Ealing, and Sutton.
This initiative is being conducted by TfL in collaboration with the Metropolitan Police as part of the Vision Zero strategy, which aims to enhance safety on London’s roads.
TfL has indicated that there is no predetermined duration for the trial, and they will continuously evaluate its outcomes.
Siwan Hayward, TfL’s director of security, policing, and enforcement, stated, „Upgrading our camera network is vital to maintaining strong, consistent enforcement, and together with the Met, we are using every tool available to deter speeding, reduce road danger, and save lives.“
Addressing Compliance Issues
The IAM has characterized the introduction of this new technology as a significant opportunity to alter driver behavior, especially given the noted poor compliance with 20 mph speed limits in London.
„It is, however, worth noting that average speeds in London are below 20 mph, so we would also like to see enforcement focus on issues such as drivers illegally using mobile phones at the wheel alongside these new trials,“ a spokesperson for IAM remarked.
