Business leaders in London are expressing concern over a significant skills gap within their workforce, particularly as the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) accelerates. A recent survey revealed that 50% of firms believe their employees lack the necessary skills to meet the demands of an AI-driven environment.

Survey Findings Highlight Growing Skills Gaps

The survey, conducted by Survation for BusinessLDN, included responses from over 2,000 business leaders. It indicated a decline in confidence regarding workforce capabilities, with the percentage of firms asserting that their workforce possesses the required skills dropping from 63% last year to 50% this year. Furthermore, the number of companies reporting significant skills and capacity gaps has surged to 15%, a notable increase from just 4% in 2025, marking the highest level recorded in the annual survey.

AI Integration and Workforce Transformation

As AI technology becomes more prevalent, three-quarters of the surveyed businesses confirmed that they are utilizing AI in some capacity, while only 5% indicated they have no plans to adopt the technology. Among those already employing AI, a striking 85% acknowledged that it has altered the skill requirements for their workforce. The survey highlighted an increased demand for skills such as critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and decision-making. Notably, Google’s new London building is also a part of this evolving landscape.

Key Statistics from the Survey

  • 35% of firms reported experiencing some skills and capacity gaps.
  • 12% of businesses plan to adopt AI, and 8% are currently exploring its potential.
  • 60% of firms with skills gaps identified a lack of advanced digital skills, while 23% noted shortages in basic digital skills.
  • 78% anticipate a significant need for advanced digital skills over the next two to five years, up from 66% last year.
  • 17% of businesses reported having no job vacancies.
  • 20% plan to reduce staff numbers, while 76% do not foresee any layoffs.

Employer Responses and Training Investments

Mark Hilton, policy delivery director for people and skills at BusinessLDN, commented on the challenges faced by businesses:

„While London businesses are embracing AI, many are finding it challenging to stay on top of their workforce skills needs given the pace of change. Positively, employers are responding by increasing investment in training, but to properly close skills gaps it is essential we have a more agile skills system that is responsive to these rapidly changing needs.“

The survey also revealed that a record 81% of firms plan to boost their training investments in the upcoming year, an increase from 80% in the previous survey and 69% in 2023. Despite the challenges, 83% of businesses reported having job vacancies, although the proportion facing difficulties in filling these roles has decreased to 32%, down from 46% a year earlier, marking the lowest level since the survey’s inception.

Contextual Overview of Employment Trends

This survey was conducted between November 25, 2025, and January 15, 2026, coinciding with recent data from the Office for National Statistics indicating that London has the highest regional unemployment rate in the UK. As businesses navigate the complexities of AI integration, the emphasis on workforce development and skill enhancement remains critical for future success.
