Longtime Waitrose Employee Terminated After Confronting Alleged Shoplifter

A dedicated employee of Waitrose has expressed his distress after being terminated from his position of 17 years for intervening in an alleged theft involving luxury Easter eggs. Walker Smith, 54, was working at the Clapham Junction location in south London when he was alerted by a customer about a suspected shoplifter.

According to Smith, the customer informed him that someone had filled a Waitrose bag with Easter eggs. He recognized the suspect as someone who had previously targeted the store. Smith confronted the individual and attempted to seize the bag, but the suspect resisted, resulting in a brief struggle.

During the altercation, the bag tore, causing several Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs, valued at £13 each, to fall to the ground. The alleged thief then fled the scene. Smith recounted that one of the chocolate bunnies broke, and in a moment of frustration, he threw a piece towards some shopping trolleys, clarifying that he did not aim it at the shoplifter.

Following the incident, Smith was reprimanded by a manager and issued an apology. However, the situation escalated, ultimately leading to his dismissal. He stated that he had been advised in the past not to confront shoplifters, but years of witnessing theft compelled him to take action.

„I’ve been there 17 years. I’ve seen it happen every hour of every day for the last five years,“ Smith remarked. „It’s everybody from drug addicts to teenagers nicking bits and bobs or walking out with bottles of wine in their arms. We’re not allowed to do anything.“ He also noted a reduction in security measures, mentioning that there were no guards present at the start of the week.

Smith expressed concern that incidents of shoplifting were not adequately reported, leaving regular staff members to handle the situation. Despite his frustration, he later reflected on his actions with regret. „When I got home I was punching myself and thinking ‘Why did I do that?’“ he said.

Days after the incident, Smith was summoned to a meeting with two managers, where he feared the outcome. He made a heartfelt appeal, stating, „Waitrose is like my family,“ but was ultimately dismissed. „I tried to stay strong and I didn’t say a word but inside I was crying. They led me out the back door by the bins. I just felt demoralized,“ he recounted.

Smith, who has been diagnosed with anxiety, mentioned that his managers were aware of his condition. Having recently moved into his own studio flat after years of living with others, he now faces uncertainty about his future. „I’m not too sure what’s going to happen with this place now. I might be homeless. My confidence is on the floor right now,“ he expressed.

He added, „Waitrose is like my family. My friends are there. I was there for 17 years; I must have been doing something right. I’m not a bad or violent or aggressive person. I just got frustrated seeing this day in and day out and not seeing Waitrose do much about it.“

This incident occurs amid a broader increase in shoplifting incidents across the UK. Official statistics indicate that there were 519,381 shoplifting offenses recorded in England and Wales for the year ending September 2025, marking a 5 percent increase from the 492,660 offenses reported the previous year, according to the Office for National Statistics.

This figure is just shy of the record 530,643 offenses documented in the 12 months leading up to March 2025. The retail union Usdaw warned in February that employees are facing „unacceptable“ levels of abuse, with evidence suggesting that two-thirds of attacks on retail staff are linked to theft or armed robbery.

There has been growing pressure on government officials to take action. Recently, Stuart Machin, the chief executive of Marks & Spencer, urged the government and London’s mayor to implement stricter measures, cautioning that shoplifting has become „more brazen, more organized, and more aggressive.“

A spokesperson for Waitrose stated, „We take the safety and security of our customers and our partners incredibly seriously, and to do this, we have policies in place which our partners are aware of and required to follow. In reference to the point on guarding – we make absolutely sure that our shops have appropriate levels of guarding, and this is constantly adjusted according to the level of risk.“
