A man has reported losing his job following an incident involving comedian Matt Lucas on the London Underground. The event, which was captured on video and shared widely online, shows Lucas being followed and confronted by Thomas Abdullah Bourne as he exited a Tube station.
The footage, which surfaced last month, depicts Bourne, 39, who is active on social media under the name „White British Muslim,“ shouting phrases such as „Free Palestine“ at Lucas, who is 51 years old and known for his work on the show Little Britain. The video sparked significant backlash on social media, with many users suggesting that Bourne’s actions were motivated by Lucas’s Jewish heritage.
Despite the criticism, Bourne has claimed that he was unaware of Lucas’s background during the encounter. In a discussion on a podcast hosted by PoliticsJoe, he stated, „I had absolutely no awareness of his background.“ The video shows Lucas initially trying to shield his face from Bourne before he calmly greets him, saying, „Hi, how are you?“ Bourne then remarks on his attire, referencing his keffiyeh, a scarf often associated with Palestinian solidarity.
Lucas responds, „No, I have no comment about it either way,“ to which Bourne inquires if he has a problem with Palestinians. The exchange escalates as Bourne labels Lucas a „Zionist“ before the video concludes.
Following the video’s circulation and subsequent media coverage, Bourne revealed that he lost his job. He recounted, „I was going up the escalator and looked to my side and saw someone giving me an uncomfortable even hostile look and I realized it was Matt Lucas. My instant reaction was to pull out my camera phone and shout ‘Free Palestine! Free Palestine!’ As a result of that video and a subsequent Daily Mail article, I actually lost my job.“
Bourne later expressed regret upon discovering that the video had gained traction on social media and that Lucas is Jewish. He said, „My heart absolutely sunk and I thought ‘Oh no, this is not good’ because I could already picture in my head how this could be framed and how this could be interpreted, and the ramifications around that. So I immediately deleted the video knowing this could have bad ramifications.“
Context of the Incident
The ongoing conflict in Gaza, which escalated after the attacks on October 7, has led to widespread protests in the UK and across Europe throughout 2023. Demonstrators in central London have been advocating for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid for Palestinians, many of whom have been displaced due to the conflict. In contrast, counter-protesters have been calling for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas.
As the situation in Gaza persists, international focus has also shifted to Iran, while pro-Palestinian demonstrations continue in London. Earlier this month, a statue of Winston Churchill was vandalized with slogans supporting Palestinian rights, an act claimed by the activist group Free the Filton 24.
