Investors are expressing cautious optimism as London stocks show a slight uptick in early trading, driven by the anticipation of a rate hike from the European Central Bank (ECB) and sustained high oil prices. The FTSE 100 index rose by 0.1% to 10,684.09, reflecting a broader sentiment in the market.
As of 08:25 BST, Brent crude oil was trading at $100.72 per barrel, down 0.5% from previous levels, while West Texas Intermediate saw a 0.3% decrease to $95.77. This marks the first time Brent has surpassed the $100 threshold since July 24, raising concerns and expectations among investors.
Market Dynamics and ECB Expectations
Patrick Munnelly from Tickmill Group highlighted that the ECB’s meeting is the focal point for market participants today. „The European Central Bank is the main event today, with markets fully priced for a 25 bps increase in the deposit facility rate to 2.50%. The hike itself is no longer the story; the reaction function is,“ he stated. Munnelly noted that money markets are now factoring in two additional quarter-point increases by April 2027, as investors prepare for a potentially prolonged inflationary environment.
Several factors are contributing to this hawkish outlook, including crude oil prices remaining above $100 per barrel, tight natural gas supplies in Europe, food price risks associated with El Nino, and ongoing demand for capital expenditures in the tech sector. Munnelly further elaborated, „Add in firmer Eurozone PMIs and improving consumer confidence, and the Governing Council faces an uncomfortable question: whether supply shocks remain temporary noise or are beginning to seed second-round wage and pricing effects.“
Sector Performance and Notable Stocks
In the equity markets, Premier Inn owner Whitbread emerged as one of the top performers on the FTSE 100, buoyed by a positive research note from Citi. Conversely, Associated British Foods faced a significant decline, with shares dropping by 8.61% after the company projected a 2.6% decrease in like-for-like sales for its Primark division, citing a challenging consumer environment. Despite this, the company anticipates total sales growth of 2% for both the fourth quarter and the full year, supported by new store openings and franchise expansions.
Electrical products retailer Currys experienced a slight dip despite reporting a strong start to the new financial year, with group like-for-like revenues increasing by 7% year-on-year over the 17 weeks ending August 29. The UK and Ireland division grew by 6%, while the Nordics saw a 9% increase.
Animal genetics firm Genus also faced challenges, with shares falling despite announcing a rise in full-year profit and a £60 million share buyback. Other companies such as M&G, Baltic Classifieds, NCC, and Prudential saw declines as they traded without entitlement to dividends.
