Parents in London now have the opportunity to purchase second-hand school uniforms through a newly launched initiative aimed at minimizing waste.
The School Uniform Reuse Network (SURN) is characterized as a „cross-borough initiative aimed at assisting schools and families in decreasing uniform waste, saving money, and fostering a more sustainable approach to children’s clothing.“
According to London Councils, which represents the 32 boroughs of the capital, this initiative „has the potential to diminish the stigma often linked to second-hand clothing.“
Rezina Chowdhury, vice chairwoman of the transport and environment committee, stated, „School uniforms frequently have a shorter lifespan than they should, despite the resources and costs involved in their production.“
Chowdhury further emphasized, „By facilitating the process for schools to enable families to pass on and purchase uniforms second-hand, this new network can help reduce waste while alleviating the financial burdens many households encounter. By enhancing the visibility and accessibility of reuse, we can establish second-hand uniforms as the norm throughout London, benefiting families, schools, and the environment alike.“
This initiative is part of a broader effort to promote sustainability and responsible consumption among families in the capital.
