A female peregrine falcon was successfully rescued after becoming trapped on the 75th floor of a skyscraper in London.
The South Essex Wildlife Hospital received a call for assistance from the concierge of a residential building in Canary Wharf, who reported that the falcon was „smashing itself against the glass“ after inadvertently flying into a roof garden on Sunday.
Once the bird was captured using a towel, it was swiftly transported to the hospital located in Orsett for a thorough examination and X-ray.
„We’ve placed her in our large flight aviary. She requires some time to recover. She’s not at 100%, but as soon as she’s ready, we definitely need to return her to the sky,“ said Sue Schwar, the founder of the hospital.
Schwar noted that the hospital frequently receives calls regarding peregrine falcons in London, as these birds often nest at high altitudes.
In an interview with Ben Fryer on BBC Essex, Schwar recounted, „The concierge was quite concerned as he couldn’t find any help. He sent me some photos, and it was a peregrine falcon repeatedly hitting the glass.“
Veterinarian Tom Linsel explained that once the bird was secured, it needed to be assessed carefully to avoid causing any harm.
Despite some blood found on the falcon’s wing, the hospital reported that there were „no major concerns“ regarding its health.
„We’ve X-rayed her, and she appears to be in good condition. The primary concern was concussion due to her repeated collisions with the glass. She’s doing well now, and there’s no sign of a nest or a mate nearby,“ Schwar added.
Once the falcon has fully recuperated, plans are in place for its return and release back into the London area.
