Three individuals have been charged following an incident in which four ambulances operated by a Jewish charity in London were set ablaze in what authorities are calling an arson attack.

The vehicles, part of the Hatzola Northwest fleet, were firebombed outside a synagogue in Golders Green during the early hours of March 23. This incident has been characterized as an antisemitic act.

Two of the accused, Hamza Iqbal, 20, and Rehan Khan, 19, both British nationals from Leyton, along with a 17-year-old boy of dual British and Pakistani descent, face charges of arson and recklessness regarding the potential endangerment of life.

According to the Metropolitan Police, all three suspects were apprehended at separate locations in east London on Wednesday.

Upcoming Court Appearance

The trio is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Saturday. The investigation is being led by the Counter Terrorism Policing (CTP) London, although officials have clarified that the incident has not been classified as terrorism at this time.

Commander Helen Flanagan, head of CTP London, stated, ‚Since this appalling attack last week, we have been working continuously to investigate and identify those responsible. The investigation has now reached a stage where three people have been charged and they will now appear in court.‘

Flanagan also acknowledged the remarkable support from the local community following the attack.

Previous Arrests and Increased Security

In the days following the arson, two additional men, aged 45 and 47, were taken into custody in connection with the incident but were subsequently released on bail until late April.

In response to the attack, there has been a noticeable increase in police presence in areas with significant Jewish populations. Detective Chief Superintendent Luke Williams, who oversees policing in North West London, remarked, ‚Since the arson attack, we have put in place an enhanced, bespoke policing plan, which has been focused around vulnerable areas not only in Golders Green, but right across London.‘

Williams added, ‚This has involved a significant number of additional officers on the ground, with the aim of protecting communities, disrupting offenders, and detecting crime. This activity is ongoing and will continue over the coming days and includes specialist officers and capability being deployed alongside local officers.‘

He noted that the operation is supported by highly visible armed police patrols intended to deter any individuals looking to harm the community.

Community Impact and Ongoing Concerns

The attack on the ambulances has raised concerns about safety and security within the Jewish community in London. The incident has sparked discussions about the need for heightened vigilance and protective measures in light of rising antisemitic sentiments.

As the investigation continues, authorities remain committed to ensuring the safety of all communities and addressing any threats that may arise.
