A young woman is raising awareness about the dangers of leaving drinks unattended after a distressing incident during a night out with friends. Ruby Calver, 21, experienced a sudden collapse after feeling an overwhelming sense of dread, which she believes was caused by being spiked at a nightclub in Shoreditch, East London.
During the outing, Ruby reported that she was unable to move her legs and subsequently fell to the ground. Her cousin, witnessing the alarming situation, called for an ambulance while Ruby was carried out of the club. She recalls blacking out and only remembers waking up in a hospital the following morning.
Details of the Incident
Ruby, a pet sitter from Chelmsford, Essex, stated that she typically manages her alcohol consumption well. On the night in question, she had consumed only a few drinks, including four small cocktail cans and a couple of stronger beverages later in the evening. Despite this, she felt that something was amiss, particularly after her drink was left unattended at the bar.
„Out of nowhere, there was this immense feeling of dread. I remember thinking ’something’s not right‘. The last thing I remember is tapping my cousin aggressively and then it just went black,“ Ruby recounted.
Witnesses reported that Ruby fell to the floor and was unable to support herself, leading to her being carried outside by some men. She described the experience as disorienting, recalling only fragments of the events that transpired after her collapse.
Health Impact and Response
After the incident, Ruby experienced severe nausea and vomiting, which she noted was unusual for her. She stated, „I was puking constantly – on the street, in the hospital, and in the ambulance. Apparently, it just kept going and going. Normally, if I throw up on a night out, I puke twice and then I’m ready to go home.“ This reaction led her to suspect that her body was rejecting whatever substance had been introduced into her system.
Ruby’s experience has heightened her anxiety about going out. She has become more vigilant and is now researching ways to protect herself, such as using drink covers. She expressed her concerns about the safety of nightlife environments and the need for women to look out for one another.
„It’s definitely freaked me out – I’ve started researching things like cup covers. I just want to be able to go out and have a nice time but it does put me off, I just don’t want to go out any more,“ Ruby said.
Advice for Others
In light of her experience, Ruby is urging others to take precautions when enjoying nights out. She emphasizes the importance of staying together with friends and being aware of one’s surroundings. Her advice includes:
- Do not leave drinks unattended.
- Go to the restroom with friends.
- Stay in groups and avoid wandering off alone.
- Consider using drink covers to prevent tampering.
Ruby stated, „Keep your girls around you because at any time you could just not feel right. Have friends around, possibly drink covers and keep an eye out, be wary. Definitely don’t leave your drink on the bar unattended for too long.“
Police Investigation
The Metropolitan Police confirmed they responded to reports of an alleged spiking incident at the bar in Shoreditch. Officers, along with the London Ambulance Service, treated Ruby before taking her to the hospital. The police are currently conducting an investigation, and no arrests have been made as of yet. They encourage anyone with information to contact them.
A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated, „The Met has invested significantly in tackling spiking, leading on new detection technology and working with partners to strengthen prevention in nightlife settings. From January to December 2025, positive outcomes, including charges, increased by 132 percent compared to the previous year.“
As Ruby awaits the results of a forensic urine sample collected by police, she hopes her story will serve as a cautionary tale for others, highlighting the need for vigilance in social settings.
