What Residents Need to Know About Upcoming Flood Alerts in London

As London braces for significant rainfall, a yellow weather warning has been issued for Thursday, alerting residents to the potential for flooding in various areas. Meteorologists predict that the capital could experience widespread precipitation, with rainfall amounts ranging from 20 to 30mm, while some regions may see totals reach 40 to 50mm.

Impact of the Weather Warning

The Met Office has placed this warning in effect from 9 AM to 10 PM on Thursday, particularly affecting outer parts of south London. The forecast indicates that heavy rain on already saturated ground may result in surface water flooding.

Authorities are cautioning about anticipated disruptions to travel, possible road flooding, and the risk of power outages as the rain arrives. Residents are urged to assess their properties for flood risks and consider preparing emergency kits and flood response plans.

Travel Advisory

Commuters and drivers are advised to stay informed regarding road conditions and public transportation updates. Adjustments to travel plans may be necessary due to the predicted severe weather.

In addition to heavy rain, strong winds are expected, with gusts potentially reaching up to 50 mph in southern and southeastern England. The updated weather warning highlights these concerns, particularly near exposed coastal areas.

Recent Weather Context

This alert follows the aftermath of Storm Goretti, which resulted in wind gusts nearing 100 mph and a rare red warning for extreme weather in the south-west. The storm led to a significant incident in Kent and Sussex, leaving approximately 30,000 properties without a water supply due to burst pipes and power outages.

As 2025 was recorded as the third warmest year since 1850, meteorological experts continue to stress the importance of being vigilant during these extreme weather events. Professor Stephen Belcher, Chief Scientist at the Met Office, remarked on the notable increase in global temperatures, underscoring the rising climatic trends.

Forecast for the Coming Days

As the evening approaches, cloud cover in London will increase, with rain anticipated to spread from the southwest overnight and the likelihood of heavy showers. Residents should also prepare for fog patches and notice a drop in temperature to around 5°C.

Looking ahead to the weekend, the forecast suggests predominantly cloudy conditions with occasional rain or showers, alongside some periods of brighter weather, and temperatures expected to remain near average.
