What to Expect from London’s Weather in the Coming Weeks? Things are set to worsen before they improve
Current conditions in London can be described as extremely cold. As January 4 progresses, it is anticipated that temperatures will likely decline further before they start to rise.
London and various regions in the UK are currently experiencing temperatures below freezing. Residents who wake up at 9 AM on a Sunday may encounter a brisk -2°C chill in the atmosphere.
Due to the severe cold, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has activated an emergency protocol for rough sleepers. The Severe Weather Emergency Protocol (SWEP) provides indoor accommodations for the city’s homeless during particularly frigid conditions.
Across the country, yellow weather warnings for snow and ice have been issued. However, London is not under these warnings, which predominantly affect Scotland, northern areas, the East Coast, the West Country, and Wales.
Forecast and Expert Insights
In recent days, London has seen a light dusting of snow. Dr. Agostinho Sousa, Head of Extreme Events and Health Protection at UKHSA, emphasized the importance of checking in on vulnerable individuals during this colder period. He stated, “As the colder weather sets in, it is vital to check in on friends, family, and neighbors that are most vulnerable.”
Dr. Sousa cautioned that forecasted temperatures can significantly affect the health of certain individuals, increasing the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and chest infections, especially in those over 65 and those with existing health conditions.
The upcoming weather forecast indicates that tomorrow (January 5) temperatures may drop to as low as -3°C around 3 AM, which is expected to be the lowest temperature projected by the BBC in the near term.
Following this drop, a warming trend will commence in London, with temperatures climbing to approximately 9°C on Monday, January 12. This moderate temperature is expected to persist until January 17.
