Why a Longtime Waitrose Employee Was Dismissed After Stopping a Shoplifter

A Waitrose employee with 17 years of service was terminated after intervening to prevent a shoplifter from stealing a large quantity of Easter eggs. Walker Smith, a 54-year-old shop assistant at a Waitrose location in Clapham Junction, South London, took action despite company policies advising staff against such interventions.

During his regular duties, Smith was alerted by a customer that someone was stealing Lindt Gold Bunny Easter eggs. Upon spotting the thief, whom he recognized as a repeat offender, he attempted to seize the bag containing the stolen items.

In the ensuing struggle, the bag broke, causing the chocolate eggs to scatter on the floor. The shoplifter managed to escape through the exit while Smith, frustrated, threw a piece of the broken bag towards some shopping trolleys.

Smith’s actions directly contradicted the directives from management, which discouraged employees from confronting shoplifters. He expressed that his decision was influenced by the ongoing issue of theft he had witnessed over the years.

„I’ve been there 17 years. I’ve seen it happen every hour of every day for the last five years,“ Smith stated. „It’s everybody from drug addicts to teenagers nicking bits and bobs or walking out with bottles of wine in their arms. We’re not allowed to do anything.“ He also noted that security measures had been reduced, with no guards present on certain days due to a lack of reported incidents.

After the incident, Smith received a reprimand from his manager and subsequently apologized. However, the situation escalated, leading to a meeting with two store managers where he made a heartfelt plea to retain his position within what he described as his „family.“ Ultimately, he was dismissed.

Smith, who has been diagnosed with anxiety, recounted the emotional toll of the dismissal: „I tried to stay strong and I didn’t say a word but inside I was crying. They led me out the back door by the bins. I just felt demoralized.“ He expressed concern about the possibility of becoming homeless after recently moving into his own studio flat following 25 years of living with roommates.

„Waitrose is like my family. My friends are there,“ he added. „I was there for 17 years; I must have been doing something right. I’m not a bad or violent or aggressive person. I just got frustrated seeing this day in and day out and not seeing Waitrose do much about it.“

Shoplifting has increasingly become a significant issue for retailers in recent years. Reports indicate that shoplifting incidents reached a 20-year high last year, with 530,643 offenses recorded in the year ending March 2025.

However, advocacy groups have highlighted that the actual number of thefts is likely much higher due to underreporting. Data from the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) suggests that approximately 5.8 million shoplifting incidents occurred in the past year.

Stuart Machin, the chief executive of Marks & Spencer, emphasized the need for government and local authorities to take stronger action against retail crime, which he described as becoming „more brazen, more organized, and more aggressive.“ The retail trade union Usdaw has also raised concerns about the unacceptable levels of violence that employees face in connection with shop thefts.

Company Response to the Incident

A spokesperson for Waitrose addressed the situation, stating, „The safety and security of our Partners and customers couldn’t be more important to us, and we have policies in place to protect both. We’ve had incidents where our Partners have been hospitalized when challenging shoplifters. Luckily, they have always recovered, but that might not always be the case.“

The spokesperson continued, „There is a serious danger to life in tackling shoplifters. We refuse to put anyone’s life at risk, and that’s why we have policies in place that are very clearly understood and must be strictly followed. As a responsible employer, we never want to be in a position where we are notifying families of a tragedy because someone tried to stop a theft. Nothing we sell is worth risking lives for.“

They also mentioned that the reporting on the incident did not encompass the full facts of the situation, asserting that the correct procedures were followed, including a standard appeals process. The company has been advocating for enhanced protections for shop workers against offenders, including the establishment of retail crime as a specific standalone offense.

As the issue of shoplifting continues to escalate, the experiences of employees like Walker Smith highlight the complexities and challenges faced by retail workers in maintaining security while adhering to company policies.
