Residents of London are expressing concern as forecasts suggest the city may soon experience another wave of extreme heat. Following a recent heatwave that saw temperatures soar to 35C, experts are warning that similar conditions could return.

Approximately two weeks ago, the Met Office reported that the UK was experiencing its hottest day in May on record, with temperatures reaching 35C. They noted, „Today will be the hottest day in May in the UK in our temperature records, with highs of 35C expected. The current May record is 32.8C. Records are usually only broken by tenths of a degree, making this heatwave unprecedented for the time of year.“ This unprecedented heat has raised alarms among residents and climate experts alike.

Upcoming Weather Forecasts

Looking ahead, the Met Office predicts a warm weekend, with temperatures expected to reach 25C on Saturday, June 13, and 24C on Sunday, June 14. However, meteorologist Jim Dales from British Weather Services has indicated that the following weekend could bring even higher temperatures, potentially matching or exceeding the recent record.

„If that comes off, then obviously that will supersede what happens this weekend by a long stretch,“ Dales stated.

Context of Rising Temperatures

The increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves can be attributed to the ongoing climate crisis, primarily driven by carbon emissions from fossil fuels. Once considered rare, temperatures of 30C are becoming increasingly common in the UK, even during the summer months. According to the latest European State of the Climate report, Europe is currently the fastest-warming continent globally.
