25 Firefighters Respond to Christmas Day Blaze in London

London residents are receiving cautionary advice against the use of candles following a series of fires during the holiday season.

On Saturday evening, a fire erupted in a house located in Edmonton, north London, resulting in a woman being hospitalized. This incident occurred just two days after separate fires were reported in a house in Hayes, south-east London, and another in Croydon, south London.

Multiple Incidents Prompt Warning

On Christmas Eve, approximately 40 firefighters responded to a fire at a maisonette in Peckham, where two adults required treatment for smoke inhalation. All four incidents are believed to have been ignited by unattended lit candles.

Richard Arnold, deputy assistant commissioner at the London Fire Brigade (LFB), stated, „Fires can cause devastation all year round, but this is heightened around Christmas with families potentially left homeless and possessions destroyed. We want to ensure Londoners take every precaution to prevent fires from spoiling the festive period.“

Emergency Responses and Risks

The fire brigade has reiterated its warning, which was originally issued on Christmas Eve after a fire in Stockwell. The Edmonton blaze necessitated the attendance of 25 firefighters as flames spread from the bedroom to the first floor and the roof.

The fire in Hayes caused damage to parts of the first floor but fortunately did not result in any injuries to the three residents who evacuated the house.

In Croydon, the fire originated in a flat on Elmwood Road, where bedding ignited from a candle. Fortunately, three individuals were able to escape unharmed from the fourth-floor incident.

Continued Vigilance Advised

The fire in Peckham on Christmas Eve received 12 emergency calls, according to the LFB. Additionally, the brigade is advising the public against placing portable heaters too close to flammable materials after a house fire on Christmas Day, which is suspected to have been caused by textiles in proximity to a fan heater.
