Bus stop stabbing victim's family 'troubled' over facts of case

Bus stop stabbing victim's family 'troubled' over facts of case

The relatives of a grandmother fatally stabbed at a bus stop have expressed their distress over alarming details surrounding the case, particularly regarding how her mentally ill assailant was able to access disturbing videos and purchase a hunting knife online.

Anita Mukhey, 66, was attacked by 24-year-old Jala Debella in front of bystanders in Edgware, north London, on the morning of May 9, 2024. Following the assault, Debella walked away nonchalantly while witnesses attempted to assist Mukhey and contacted emergency services. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, police, and civilians, Mukhey succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

Concerns Over Mental Health Assessments

Debella was found unfit to stand trial for murder. However, a jury at the Old Bailey determined that he had indeed killed Mukhey. The court revealed that Debella had a fixation on graphic online content and managed to acquire the hunting knife despite residing in a mental health rehabilitation facility.

The knife was delivered to his residence in Colindale, north London, approximately one hour before he stabbed Mukhey 18 times, an act that reflected the violent imagery he had previously viewed, according to court testimony.

Mukhey’s family voiced their apprehensions regarding how Debella was permitted to obtain a knife. In their statement, they remarked: „Many of us understand the significance of having a mother who serves as the heart of the family. This was certainly true for us. As the case has progressed, several deeply troubling facts have surfaced. The court has revealed that a man with severe mental illness was recognized by services and evaluated by consultant psychiatrists as psychologically stable and safe for the community. Yet, he was simultaneously engaging in increasingly concerning behavior outside of those evaluations, such as acquiring weapons and researching extreme violence—actions that ultimately mirrored the violence he later inflicted. This disconnect is difficult to accept and raises serious questions about how risk is assessed and whether current models can adequately identify dangers that develop beyond the spoken words of the consulting room. This situation is reminiscent of the Impact on Community Following Murder Charge in Lambeth.

Questions About Online Purchases

The family further questioned how Debella was able to purchase a knife online while living in a monitored and Care Quality Commission-registered mental health rehabilitation home. They stated, „Whether that is appropriate, lawful, or safe is not something this trial has examined, but it is an issue that must now be thoroughly investigated. We acknowledge that these inquiries fall outside the scope of today’s proceedings. We want to emphasize that our family is prepared to assist the coroner in any future inquest to help learn lessons and enhance public safety.“

  • Two months prior to the attack, Debella purchased a 21cm-long blade for £120 from a shop in Covent Garden.
  • Less than a month before the incident, he attempted to buy a fixed blade knife online, but the seller refused due to his residence.
  • Three days before the stabbing, he successfully ordered the hunting knife used in the attack.

Before leaving for the attack, Debella searched for „killing video“ on his computer and visited a site featuring graphic violent content. After returning home post-attack, he searched for terms like „knife,“ „gore video,“ and „breaking news.“ The jury took less than an hour to conclude that he had stabbed and killed Mukhey and had possessed the knife. This case raises parallels to the Arrest Made in Gillingham Crash That Claimed Life of Pedestrian.

Judge Philip Katz KC adjourned sentencing until Friday, indicating that Debella would remain at a secure hospital in Liverpool, where he is receiving treatment for paranoid schizophrenia. The judge noted that if Debella were to recover, he could face murder charges. Additionally, the circumstances surrounding the case evoke questions similar to those in What Happened to the 16-Year-Old Girl at the London Underground Station?.
