What circumstances led to a tragic incident at a bus stop in north London?
A man, characterized as a „gore video fanatic,“ reportedly purchased a hunting knife online and subsequently fatally stabbed a woman 18 times while she was waiting at the Edgware Road bus stop, according to details presented in court.
Details of the Incident
Witnesses have alleged that Jala Debella was seen conducting the „senseless attack“ on 66-year-old Anita Mukhey on May 9, 2024, before „casually walking away“ from the scene. On Monday, during proceedings at the Old Bailey, jurors were informed that the 24-year-old Debella was unwell and unable to attend the court, and he has not entered a plea.
Nature of the Trial
This particular court proceeding is a trial of the facts, which occurs when the defendant is considered unfit to stand trial, yet the prosecution seeks to establish whether the alleged crimes were committed. Prosecutor Jonathan Polnay KC addressed the jurors, outlining their responsibility to determine if Debella was responsible for Mukhey’s death.
Background and Evidence
The court learned that Debella had resided in Colindale, north-west London, in a facility designed to support individuals with mental health challenges. Polnay stated, „Debella killed Ms. Mukhey in a senseless attack – so far as the prosecution are aware, they were completely unknown to each other.“
It was disclosed that the defendant had a „particular interest in very violent videos“ found online, often showcasing extreme violence involving knives and similar weapons.
- Three days prior to the incident, he ordered a hunting knife with a sheath from an online retailer, which was delivered on the morning of the stabbing.
- After the delivery, Debella reportedly searched for „killing video“ and accessed a site featuring graphic violent content.
- CCTV footage recorded him walking north along Edgware Road and then returning to where Mukhey was attacked.
Witness accounts indicated a „high-pitched scream“ just before Mukhey collapsed, with the first emergency call being made at 11:48 BST.
Aftermath and Arrest
Mukhey was pronounced dead at 12:22 despite the immediate attempts of medical personnel and law enforcement to assist. Later that day, authorities retrieved a knife resembling the one Debella had purchased online. Forensic analysis indicated the presence of DNA from both Debella and Mukhey on the weapon.
Upon returning to his residence, Debella reportedly searched the web for terms including „knife,“ „gore video,“ and „breaking news.“ Jurors were informed that police arrived at his accommodation at 16:46 and arrested him on suspicion of murder.
During a police interview, Debella reportedly provided no comments and was subsequently charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon. The trial is ongoing.
