A man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 26 years for the fatal stabbing of another individual in an unprovoked attack near Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Devon Brown, 30, was found guilty of murdering Okechukwu Iweha, 46, using a machete in Tottenham, north London, on April 7 of the previous year.
Following the incident, Brown fled to the United States but maintained his innocence during the trial. However, the jury ultimately convicted him.
Ojiugo Mukasa, the sister of the victim, addressed the Old Bailey during the sentencing, describing the event as „cruel and inexplicable“ and noted, „Nothing can truly convey the magnitude of what has been taken from us.“
The court heard that Brown was motivated by a desire for revenge against an individual who had stolen his bicycle and £10,000 in cash. Judge Anuja Dhir KC commented, „You were tragically mistaken in your belief that Mr. Iweha was that man.“
According to the court, Brown produced a large machete hidden in a sheath within his clothing and repeatedly struck Mr. Iweha, who ultimately succumbed to his injuries on the street. A passing Uber driver discovered Mr. Iweha’s body.
A stab wound to the chest was later confirmed as the cause of death.
Extradition and Additional Sentences
Brown was located by the Metropolitan Police in Dallas, Texas, where he was extradited and arrested in January of this year, as per court proceedings.
In addition to the murder charge, he received concurrent sentences of 18 weeks for perverting the course of public justice and 16 months for possession of a knife blade.
His co-defendant, Leandro Kaienga, 29, from Croydon, south London, was also sentenced to concurrent terms of 18 weeks for perverting the course of public justice and 23 weeks for possession of a knife blade. He was released as he had already completed his sentence while on remand.
