In Ilford: Man Admits Guilt in Fatal Dangerous Driving Case

A man has admitted guilt for causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal road traffic incident that occurred in Ilford in October.

This development comes after an investigation during which Metropolitan Police officers identified, located, and apprehended the suspect just four hours post-incident.

Justin Clarke-Samuel, aged 41, from Woodford Green, also acknowledged his guilt at the Old Bailey on Monday, December 8, to one count of dangerous driving in Camden, Islington, and Hackney on the same day as the fatal collision.

Details of the Incident

Clarke-Samuel failed to stop his vehicle after colliding with 20-year-old Yubin Tamang on Redbridge Lane East in Ilford at 11:33 PM on Saturday, October 18. He was recorded driving over 60 miles per hour in a 30 miles per hour zone when he struck Yubin, who was crossing the road. Yubin succumbed to his injuries in the hospital two days later.

Detective Inspector Mark Braithwaite, from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit, remarked, „Our thoughts and sympathies remain with Yubin’s family. While nothing can undo their loss, today’s two guilty pleas mark a step toward justice. We hope this brings them some measure of comfort.“ He added, „Split-second decisions behind the wheel can have devastating, life-changing consequences. Too often, we find ourselves supporting families who have lost loved ones because drivers chose to ignore speed limits and drink laws.”

Investigation and Arrest

On the night of the collision, officers researched the license plate of the vehicle involved, which was captured on CCTV. The investigation established Clarke-Samuel as the registered owner and insurance policy holder of the vehicle.

By 3:00 AM on Sunday, October 19, officers found the BMW parked near Clarke-Samuel’s residence. The car exhibited significant damage, including a shattered windscreen, extensive marks on the bonnet, front bumper damage, and a missing wing mirror cover.

Clarke-Samuel was apprehended at his home later that day on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, as the victim was still alive at that time. He faced additional charges for failing to stop and for driving while unfit due to alcohol or drugs.

On the same day, he was charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving, and this charge was later amended following Yubin’s death. Prosecutors subsequently added two further counts of dangerous driving during a court hearing at the Old Bailey on November 24.

On December 4, Clarke-Samuel received an additional charge for causing death by careless driving while over the legal alcohol limit. Sentencing is scheduled for February 12.

Clarke-Samuel did not enter pleas to the charge of causing death by careless driving while under the alcohol limit or to a second count of dangerous driving specific to Redbridge following the incident.
