Annabel Rook, a 46-year-old charity worker, was tragically murdered after suffering multiple stab wounds. In a poignant letter discovered posthumously on her laptop, Rook expressed her deep-seated fears regarding her abusive partner, Clifton George, and her desire to end their tumultuous ten-year relationship.

In her unsent letter addressed to George, Rook articulated her feelings of unhappiness, stating, „However hard I tried, I seemed to make you angry.“ This letter, which was never sent, was found by police following her brutal death at their home in Stoke Newington. On June 3, 2026, a jury at Snaresbrook Crown Court convicted George, 44, of murder, stemming from the events of June 16, 2025.

Details of the Relationship and Trial

The trial, which lasted four weeks, revealed troubling evidence about George’s volatile temperament. Prosecutor William Emlyn Jones KC described Rook’s letter as „a heartbreaking description of a woman reluctantly letting go of her dream of a happy life with her partner.“ He noted that the letter was not filled with anger or resentment but rather reflected her acceptance that the relationship was untenable.

In her correspondence, Rook suggested a separation, recalling a previous agreement that they were no longer making each other happy. „Somehow love wasn’t enough. We couldn’t reach each other,“ she wrote, adding, „My heart is broken.“ This sentiment was echoed in another note where she recounted feeling isolated and unable to express herself due to fear of provoking George’s anger.

Incidents of Abuse

Rook’s letter also highlighted a specific incident at the Glastonbury Festival in 2024, where George’s drunken outburst led to a confrontation with a friend. Rook reflected on this moment, stating, „Something inside of me snapped,“ and expressed her frustration over their constant misunderstandings. She felt she was living in a state of anxiety, writing, „I couldn’t deal with feeling like I couldn’t be myself in case I said something that upset you.“

Despite her efforts to maintain peace, Rook described feeling „lonely“ and unable to be true to herself within the confines of their relationship. In another note, she recounted a moment of distress while trying to avoid George’s wrath over household chores, stating, „You are raging downstairs, emptying the bins with fury, the bins I’ve not emptied, the mess I’ve created.“ She expressed a desire to escape his unkindness, noting, „Mostly I don’t want you hurting me anymore.“

Final Days and Legacy

In the days leading up to her death, Rook had communicated her intentions to separate from George, insisting that he should vacate their shared home. George, an electrician, attempted to deflect responsibility during the trial, claiming he was provoked into a violent outburst when Rook pushed him. However, evidence from friends and family painted a different picture, illustrating George’s history of aggression and Rook’s feelings of walking on eggshells around him.

In February 2023, Rook confided in her father, Judge Peter Rook, expressing her fears about George’s behavior and labeling him a bully. Just days before her murder, she left a message for her sister, stating that the relationship was „not tenable“ and expressing concern about potential future conflicts. „I fear there will be some more wrath to come,“ she wrote, but also conveyed a sense of resilience, stating, „I will get through this and will be stronger for it out the other side.“

Generosity and Justice

Despite the turmoil in her life, Rook’s compassionate nature shone through. The court heard that she had planned to provide George with £50,000 to assist him in finding a new home and hoped he would continue to join her family on vacations. In a ruling regarding George’s defense, Mr. Justice Constable KC emphasized the overwhelming evidence of George’s propensity for extreme anger, stating that the murder occurred during an „extreme loss of temper.“

Peter Rook, Annabel’s father, reflected on her life, stating, „Annabel was a truly wonderful woman. One of the world’s life enhancers. Above all else, she was a much-loved mother devoted to her two fine sons.“ He noted her dedication to helping vulnerable individuals, highlighting her work in refugee camps and her co-founding of MamaSuze, an organization aimed at supporting refugee women. „She dedicated her life to helping others,“ he said, emphasizing that her legacy should not be overshadowed by her tragic death but rather celebrated for the love and support she provided to many.
