A new interactive map highlights the neighborhoods in London most affected by criminal activity. Westminster has recorded the highest ‚crime severity‘ score.
The map reveals significant crime statistics across the nation, presenting alarming data for residents and visitors to some of the UK’s most frequented tourist destinations. The ‚crime severity‘ scores evaluate the severity of offenses by considering both the nature and frequency of crimes, assigning greater weight to serious offenses such as murder and sexual assault compared to minor thefts.
Blackpool and Other Locations
Interestingly, Blackpool has emerged with the most severe crime statistics outside of central London, reporting the highest incidence of violent crimes and sexual offenses of any council area in the country. Over two-thirds of the town’s overall severity score of 31.7 is attributed to these serious criminal categories.
Much of the crime occurring in central London disproportionately targets tourists. For example, Middlesbrough follows Blackpool, with a crime severity score of 29.9, primarily due to high levels of violence and sexual offenses. This is followed by Manchester at 28.9, Birmingham at 27.3, and Bradford at 25.8.
London’s Rankings
When assessing London’s crime severity, Westminster tops the list with a score of 61.0, while Camden ranks second at 32.4; the high scores in these boroughs are largely a result of the substantial number of theft-related incidents.
Conversely, the safest area identified is Wiltshire, which boasts a low crime severity score of merely 6.0. Other relatively safe regions include Wokingham at 6.4, Ribble Valley in Lancashire at 6.9, Waverley at 6.9, and East Hampshire at 7.1.
Understanding Crime Severity Scores
Crime severity scores offer a nuanced representation of the impact of crime in different regions, as they differentiate between various offense types, unlike crime rates that focus solely on volume. These scores reflect the consequences of offenses, with more severe crimes receiving significantly higher scores than lesser offenses, such as criminal damage.
Since the introduction of crime severity scores in the year ending March 2003, England and Wales’ overall score was 15.9, which steadily declined to a low of 9.3 by March 2013. However, scores have increased annually since then, reaching a peak of 16.4 in March 2023, and currently standing at 16.3.
Police Force Comparisons
Among police forces, Cleveland Police in the North East has the highest crime severity score at 23.4, followed closely by West Yorkshire at 22.4, West Midlands at 22.3, Greater Manchester at 20.7, and South Yorkshire at 20.6. The Metropolitan Police, despite being the busiest in terms of crime numbers, holds a lower score of 20.4. In contrast, North Yorkshire Police reports the least challenging environment, with a crime severity score of just 9.8.
