A man has received a life sentence after being found guilty of the murder of 42-year-old Oleg Sloboda in Walthamstow last year.
Beibit Baimolda, 34, of no fixed address, was convicted of murder following a trial held at Inner London Crown Court. On Thursday, November 20, he was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years.
Detective Inspector Luke Hampton, who oversaw the investigation, stated: „Oleg leaves behind his son, sister, and mother – our thoughts remain with them as they continue to come to terms with their loss.
„This was a brutal and senseless attack on a man in his own home. Yesterday’s sentence reflects the gravity of Baimolda’s actions and the devastating impact they have had. It is our hope that the sentence provides a sense of justice for Oleg’s family.“
Details of the Incident
Baimolda’s sentencing comes after an investigation carried out by homicide detectives from the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime Command.
The police were alerted at approximately 21:00 hours on Monday, May 6, 2024, regarding a disturbance at a residence in Cranston Gardens, Chingford. Upon arrival, officers entered the premises and discovered Oleg Sloboda on the floor of his bedroom, suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite the immediate efforts of officers and the London Ambulance Service, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
His Honour Judge Kelleher praised the first officers on the scene for their quick actions and their attempts to assist Oleg.
A post-mortem examination revealed that Oleg sustained 16 slash and stab wounds to his face and torso, and a knife was found near his body.
Trial Evidence and Conviction
Baimolda was apprehended at the scene and charged with murder on Wednesday, May 8, 2024.
Detectives established that Baimolda and Oleg had spent the day socializing with others at the residence prior to visiting a local pub and returning home together. At some point during the evening, Baimolda initiated a violent attack on Oleg, asserting throughout the investigation that he acted in self-defense. However, he chose not to testify during the trial.
Specialist forensic analysis was crucial in countering Baimolda’s claim of self-defense. Blood pattern analysis and a thorough examination of the crime scene indicated that the attack occurred entirely in close proximity to where Oleg was found, with no evidence supporting a prolonged struggle, undermining Baimolda’s defense argument.
On Friday, October 10, a jury unanimously found Baimolda guilty of murder.
