The storm is poised to impact a significant portion of the UK, prompting the issuance of severe weather warnings by the Met Office.
Currently, much of the UK is under alerts as Storm Goretti begins to affect conditions nationwide. Although London has thus far escaped the strictest warnings, the storm’s „multi-hazard“ characteristics indicate that residents should prepare for a wet and turbulent 48 hours ahead.
Weather Conditions Forecast
Regions of the Midlands and Wales anticipate heavy snowfall, while the focus for London and the South East remains on heavy rainfall and increasing winds. Forecasts suggest that London will experience wet, windy, and notably cold conditions. Residents are advised to equip themselves with umbrellas and durable coats rather than snow shovels.
Transportation may also face disruptions, particularly for trains heading north or west out of London, due to anticipated snow in those regions.
Timeline of Weather Changes
The day commenced with cloudy and misty conditions accompanied by morning drizzle, however, conditions are expected to worsen from late morning onward. Rain and strengthening winds are predicted to approach from the southwest, with occasional heavy rain expected throughout the day.
By evening, coastal gales will likely develop, with some of these gales potentially severe, as temperatures peak at a maximum of 8°C.
Forecasts indicate that London will encounter its most intense rainfall before midnight, with temperatures dropping to a minimum of 0°C. There is an increasing likelihood of sleet and snow, particularly in elevated regions. Wind speeds are also projected to intensify significantly, resulting in damaging gusts near the coastline.
The Chief Forecaster at the Met Office, Neil Armstrong, has characterized Storm Goretti as a “multi-hazard event.” Although the most severe snow impacts are anticipated in Wales and the Midlands, where accumulations ranging from 5-10cm are common and local totals could reach 30cm, the southern edge of the storm presents its own unique challenges.
Armstrong noted, “Goretti will bring snow on its northern edge… though rain and strong winds also have the potential to bring disruption to many.” While there are currently no specific weather warnings affecting London, numerous alerts encompass surrounding regions, which could lead to delays or cancellations for services traveling toward the West Country, the Midlands, or parts of East Anglia.
