A man has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the fatal stabbing of an elderly woman in her 80s outside her residence in Plumstead, located in southeast London.
Authorities responded to reports of an individual wielding a knife at Red Lion Place at approximately 8:50 AM on Wednesday.
The victim, who has been identified locally as Doris, was found with critical injuries and was rushed to the hospital, where she later succumbed to her wounds.
Additionally, a second man was allegedly threatened with the knife but managed to escape without injury.
The suspect, a man in his sixties believed to have had a prior acquaintance with the victim, voluntarily presented himself at a nearby police station shortly after 9:10 AM.
He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder.
Officers transported him to the hospital for treatment of injuries that are not deemed life-threatening.
Forensic teams have been collecting evidence from a Mini Countryman parked within a secured area outside the victim’s home.
Local residents have expressed their shock and sorrow over the incident, describing Doris as a cherished member of the community who enjoyed engaging with patrons at the adjacent pub.
„Doris would stand outside and chat to the pubgoers for hours. She was an extremely lovely lady,“ remarked one neighbor.
The same resident added, „This is horrific. She was the kindest, warmest, sweet woman you could meet. It’s horrendous news.“
Detective Inspector Dean Grice, who is leading the Metropolitan Police investigation into her death, characterized the event as „a deeply tragic incident.“
„A prompt and coordinated investigation has now been launched to establish the full circumstances, and specialist officers are continuing to support the family throughout. Our thoughts remain firmly with the victim’s family during this difficult time,“ Grice stated.
Authorities have confirmed that they are not seeking any additional suspects related to the homicide.
Detective Superintendent James Derham, the senior officer overseeing policing in the area, sought to reassure residents regarding their safety.
„At this stage, we believe that this was an isolated incident, and I want to reassure the community that there is no wider risk to the public. We understand the impact a crime like this has on the community, and you can expect to see an increased police presence in the area. Specialized family liaison officers are currently providing support to the victim’s relatives as the investigation progresses.
