A question arises: How did a vehicle become a weapon in a tragic murder case? A man has received a conviction for the murder of another individual using his car, following a prior incident where he inflicted injuries on two security personnel by driving at them.
On Monday, 12 January, a jury at the Inner London Crown Court rendered a guilty verdict against Trevelle Rowland, 34, of Cornelia Street, Islington. He was found guilty of murder, dangerous driving, and two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm.
Details of the Case
Detective Inspector Aytac Necati, who supervised the investigation, stated, „Rowland is an extremely dangerous man. He utilized his car as a weapon against three men – one of whom tragically lost his life.“
Necati characterized Rowland as a „devious liar“ for misleading authorities regarding the initial incident, where he drove his vehicle into security personnel over a minor dispute, only to later take the life of another man in a similar fashion. Both incidents were captured by CCTV cameras.
The detective expressed condolences to the family of Fergany Mvuezolo, aged 35, who was among the victims, and acknowledged Rowland’s surviving victims as well, remarking on the devastation left in Rowland’s path.
Sequence of Events
The series of events unfolded around 05:20hrs on Sunday, 24 March 2024, when police responded to reports of a collision on Barking Road, East Ham, alongside the London Ambulance Service. Upon arrival, officers discovered Mvuezolo severely injured. Despite immediate first aid efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
Utilizing CCTV footage, witness accounts, and mobile phone recordings, investigators pieced together the circumstances leading to the fatal incident. Mvuezolo was acquainted with Rowland and was part of a group that got into a dispute with him outside a restaurant. Rowland initially departed the scene but returned in his VW Tiguan a short time later, careening into Mvuezolo.
Witnesses identified Rowland as the driver and provided testimony to the police, prompting a manhunt that concluded with his arrest at Heathrow Airport later that same day, as he attempted to escape the country. Officers found a receipt for the restaurant in his possession, directly connecting him to the site of the crime.
Previous Incident
Authorities subsequently connected this incident in East Ham to a similar attack that occurred ten months earlier. On Monday, 29 May 2023, Rowland drove the same vehicle into two security guards outside a pub in Ripple Road, Barking, following a dispute over a baseball cap. One guard sustained significant injuries, while the other suffered a minor hand injury.
The VW was later impounded by officers after it was located parked in Barley Close, Dartford. On Tuesday, 30 May, Rowland visited the Dagenham police station to inquire about the vehicle, maintaining that he had rented it to an associate, a claim he reiterated during a police interview in June 2023. However, both security guards later identified him as the driver who had attacked them.
Rowland now faces sentencing scheduled for Thursday, 15 January.
