Community Petition Supports Iconic Wine Bar
Nearly 1,000 individuals have signed a petition advocating for the continued presence of Bishops Wine Bar in the Whitgift Centre, where it has served the Croydon community for over 40 years. The bar, known for its eclectic atmosphere where diverse patrons, including drag queens and solicitors, interact, is facing the possibility of eviction.
Angela Ferrara, who has co-managed Bishops Wine Bar with her father Tony for the past 17 years, described the establishment as a unique gathering place. „We have all types of people in here,“ she noted, emphasizing the bar’s welcoming environment. The walls are adorned with Croydon memorabilia and tributes to pop culture icons, creating a vibrant backdrop for patrons.
Eviction Notice Raises Concerns
The festive season was marred for Angela and Tony by a letter from their landlord, Whitgift Limited Partnership, delivered on New Year’s Eve. The notice indicated that they must vacate the premises within six months due to a break clause in their lease. The landlord has stated that they are open to discussions regarding relocation.
Angela expressed disappointment over the impersonal nature of the eviction notice, especially given the bar’s longstanding history in the Whitgift Centre since 1982. The notice, which requires them to leave by June 2026, has left them feeling abandoned, as they seek clarity on the decision.
Future Uncertain Amid Redevelopment Plans
The landlord has indicated intentions to enhance public access and experience in the area while preparing for future redevelopment. Angela and Tony are not seeking special treatment but rather answers regarding their situation. They believe the eviction is linked to the long-anticipated redevelopment of the Whitgift shopping centre, which has been in planning for nearly 15 years without significant progress.
Bishops Wine Bar is situated in a less-trafficked area of the Whitgift Centre, adjacent to the former Allders car park. The closure of this car park in May 2024 has significantly impacted foot traffic, making the bar feel increasingly isolated.
Challenges Faced by the Bar
Angela highlighted the challenges posed by their location, stating that the lack of signage directing visitors to the bar has compounded their difficulties. She described the management of the Whitgift Centre as unhelpful, noting that they have faced issues with access to essential facilities, such as their safe and food storage, due to the car park’s closure.
Despite these challenges, Angela and Tony have maintained a loyal customer base, with many patrons forming lasting friendships at the bar. A petition launched in response to the eviction news has garnered significant support, including backing from local MP Natasha Irons, who has reached out to the landlord on their behalf.
Community Support and Future Events
The bar is not only a social hub but also hosts a variety of live music events, featuring local talent and themed performances. Angela expressed her commitment to the bar, stating, „You walk in and you just get it — if you do, you’ll come back.“ The establishment has become a cherished part of the community, particularly for older single women who appreciate its friendly atmosphere.
As the future remains uncertain, Angela and Tony continue to hope for a resolution that allows them to keep their beloved bar open. Angela reflected on the emotional toll of the potential closure, stating, „I don’t think we’ll get another bar like this.“ The landlord has reiterated their willingness to discuss relocation options as they move forward with their plans for the Whitgift Centre.
