A man has been formally charged following a collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle.
Authorities were alerted to the incident on Southend Lane in Bellingham on Friday, 31 October at 22:13 hours.
It is reported that the vehicle involved did not stop at the scene.
The pedestrian, a 65-year-old woman, is currently hospitalized and in life-threatening condition.
Michael McLaughlin, 38, from Heath Park, Buncrana in the Republic of Ireland, was apprehended on Friday, 7 November, while on a motorway in Northern Ireland by officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI).
He has been arrested on charges of causing serious injury through dangerous driving and failing to stop following a road traffic incident.
McLaughlin was subsequently transported to England, where he was interviewed at a police station located in south London.
On Saturday, 8 November, he was charged with both causing serious injury through dangerous driving and failing to stop after the collision.
He remains in custody and is set to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 10 November.
Specialists are providing support to the family of the injured pedestrian.
Officers from the Metropolitan Police’s Serious Collision Investigative Unit are continuing their investigation and are eager to hear from any potential witnesses who may have information regarding the incident.
