Local residents and politicians have expressed their support for the management team of the Park Tavern in South London, who are facing eviction from the venue by Heineken’s pub division. This comes after the managers invested over £150,000 to restore the pub, which has become a cherished community hub.
A petition advocating for the managers to remain at the Park Tavern has garnered more than 1,000 signatures, reflecting the strong community backing. Amir Matinahmadi, representing the pub’s leaseholder MFM Pub Group, stated that significant renovations were undertaken to revitalize the historic establishment, which had fallen into disrepair under previous management.
Challenges Faced by Management
Matinahmadi noted that the situation deteriorated after Star Pubs, a subsidiary of Heineken UK, took control of the pub in October 2024 under a tied tenancy agreement. This arrangement required the tenant to purchase stock directly from the landlord, which Matinahmadi argued complicated their operations. He claimed that Star Pubs had withheld beer orders when the pub fell behind on rent, subsequently imposing fines for sourcing stock from alternative suppliers, including a recent penalty of £3,500.
„It’s just constantly fighting, in an environment where you’re already struggling, and you have to deal with this,“ Matinahmadi remarked.
Star Pubs responded by stating that MFM could not continue at the pub due to „serious issues“ during their management. Although MFM’s tenancy was set to expire in June 2026, Matinahmadi expressed that they were misled into believing their lease would be renewed during informal discussions with Star Pubs. The company subsequently issued a section 25 notice opposing the lease renewal and requested that the management vacate the premises by August 5.
Community Support and Political Action
Matinahmadi indicated that MFM is contesting the termination of the tenancy, as no legal proceedings for possession have been initiated. The potential loss of the pub has significantly affected the management team, particularly concerning the job security of their staff. „It broke us, telling staff that the venue is going to be taken away from us and [they] might have to find new jobs,“ he said.
Despite the challenges ahead, Matinahmadi described the situation as a „David and Goliath battle“ to retain their place in the pub. MFM plans to escalate the dispute to the Pubs Code Adjudicator, with Putney MP Fleur Anderson also advocating for an investigation into the matter.
„Everybody has been in uproar,“ Matinahmadi noted. „We’ve received so many emails and messages begging for us to stick with it and not give the pub up and fight.“
Putney councillor Jasmin Glynne initiated a Change.org petition to support MFM, which quickly amassed over 1,000 signatures within two weeks. Glynne has voiced concerns regarding Star Pubs‘ treatment of MFM and emphasized the importance of the Park Tavern to the local community.
„The Park Tavern is one of the most beloved spots in this part of Putney. Residents have watched the current management transform it into a thriving, welcoming local. After investing so much into restoring the building, they deserve to be treated fairly. I urge Star Pubs to listen to the community and keep the current management in place,“ Glynne stated.
Historical Significance of the Park Tavern
Built in 1902 and expanded in 1926, the Park Tavern holds a two-star rating on the Campaign for Real Ale’s (CAMRA) inventory, recognized for its „very special national historic interest“. A spokesperson for Star Pubs confirmed that while they would not disclose specific details regarding the operator’s business arrangements, MFM’s continued presence at the pub was not feasible due to significant issues encountered during their management.
„We are committed to keeping pubs open and thriving. To that end, we have invested £328 million into our pubs since 2018 and are spending a further £44.5 million this year, safeguarding them for the future,“ the spokesperson said.
Star Pubs also indicated that they have received interest from other operators eager to take over the Park Tavern once it is vacated. Plans are in place to undertake essential repairs and eventually refurbish the pub’s ground floor trading area and exterior, which require investment.
As the situation unfolds, the community remains hopeful for a resolution that allows the Park Tavern to continue serving as a vital local establishment under its current management.
