A man has been taken into custody on suspicion of murder following the fatal stabbing of an elderly woman outside her residence.
Metropolitan Police were alerted at 08:50 on Wednesday, April 1, to Red Lion Place in Plumstead after receiving reports of an individual armed with a knife. Officers, along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service, arrived at the scene to find a woman in her 80s suffering from severe injuries. She was transported to a hospital but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.
In a separate incident, another man was threatened with a knife but fortunately did not sustain any injuries.
Shortly after 09:10, a man in his 60s voluntarily presented himself at a nearby police station, where he was arrested on suspicion of murder. He was subsequently taken to the hospital by police officers for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the arrested individual and the deceased woman were acquainted. Authorities have stated they are not seeking any additional suspects.
The family of the victim has been informed and is receiving support from specialized officers.
Detective Inspector Dean Grice, who is overseeing the investigation, remarked, “This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts remain firmly with the victim’s family during this difficult time.”
He added, “Officers responded swiftly to the initial reports and worked closely with London Ambulance Service colleagues to provide immediate care at the scene.”
A thorough investigation is currently underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident, with specialized officers continuing to assist the victim’s family.
Detective Superintendent James Derham, who oversees policing in the area, stated, “At this stage, we believe that this was an isolated incident and I want to reassure the community that there is no wider risk to the public.”
