A Metropolitan Police officer is set to undergo an expedited misconduct hearing after being convicted of rape.
PC Rupert Edwards, who is part of the South West Command Unit, was found guilty of the crime on Friday, May 22, at Southwark Crown Court.
This conviction marks a significant development, as the Metropolitan Police and prosecutors collaborated to present evidence from two earlier cases—despite PC Edwards being acquitted in those instances—to illustrate a troubling pattern of behavior.
Currently suspended from his duties, PC Edwards was convicted of raping a woman in January 2018 while he was off-duty. The incident was reported to authorities in October 2023.
Investigation and Prosecution Details
Chief Superintendent Dan Knowles, who oversees policing in south west London, expressed his deep admiration for the victim’s bravery in coming forward. He stated,
“This was a despicable offence and I have huge admiration and gratitude for the victim for having the courage to come forward and report PC Edwards.”
Knowles praised the detectives involved in the case for their thorough investigation, which led to PC Edwards being charged as quickly as possible and ensured that the most compelling evidence was presented in court. He noted,
“It was a bold step to use evidence from his previous trial to support this latest prosecution and demonstrates our commitment to supporting victims of police perpetrated abuse.”
He further emphasized the commitment to pursuing dangerous offenders who target women and girls, stating,
“My message to anyone who may have experienced something that didn’t feel right is that you can and should come forward. You will be listened to, and we will do everything we can to support you.”
Timeline of Events
In October 2023, a woman reported to the police that she had been raped by PC Edwards on January 1, 2018, following a New Year’s Eve celebration. An investigation was initiated, leading to Edwards‘ arrest on April 29, 2024. After further inquiries, he was charged with rape on March 12, 2025.
During the trial, the court examined evidence from two earlier cases involving PC Edwards, which included allegations of rape against two different women in August and September 2022. Although juries in those cases returned not guilty verdicts, prosecutors successfully introduced elements of that evidence—such as recorded interviews and cross-examinations of the victims—into this trial. This strategy, approved by the court, highlighted alarming similarities in Edwards‘ behavior and was instrumental in achieving his conviction.
The victim-survivor in this case, along with those from the previous allegations, received support from specialized officers dedicated to their care.
Next Steps and Organizational Response
Misconduct proceedings were temporarily halted to prevent any interference with the criminal case regarding the latest rape charge. PC Edwards will now face an accelerated misconduct hearing, which could lead to his dismissal from the Metropolitan Police.
Sentencing for PC Edwards is scheduled for Friday, July 10.
