The tragic loss of an unborn child has left a family devastated after a police chase culminated in a collision in South London. The incident, which occurred late on Saturday, June 13, involved a car being pursued by law enforcement that crashed into the vehicle of the child’s parents.

The crash took place around 11:30 PM on Lewisham Way when officers initiated a pursuit of a vehicle displaying cloned number plates that failed to stop. The suspect vehicle collided with another car driven by a man in his 20s, who was accompanied by his heavily pregnant partner, also in her 20s.

The father sustained injuries that were neither life-threatening nor life-changing, while the mother was transported to a hospital by the London Ambulance Service and London Fire Brigade. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, the baby did not survive. The mother remains hospitalized but is reported to be in stable condition.

Investigation and Arrests

The driver of the suspect vehicle, a 29-year-old man, has been arrested on multiple charges, including causing death by dangerous driving, causing serious injury by dangerous driving, theft of a motor vehicle, failure to stop, and possession of class A drugs. He was also taken to the hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident, which has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct due to the circumstances surrounding the police chase. Detective Inspector Suzanne Quinton from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed condolences, stating,

“Our thoughts are with the mother and father involved, and their family following the tragic loss of their child.”
