Metropolitan Police have taken a man into custody on suspicion of murder after an elderly woman was fatally stabbed outside her residence in south London.
Authorities responded to an incident on Red Lion Place in Plumstead at 8:50 AM on Wednesday, following reports of an individual wielding a knife.
Upon arrival, police officers and paramedics from the London Ambulance Service discovered the woman, aged in her 80s, suffering from severe injuries. Despite immediate medical attention and her swift transport to a hospital, she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Another individual present at the scene reportedly faced threats from the assailant but fortunately did not sustain any injuries.
At approximately 9:10 AM, a man in his 60s voluntarily approached a nearby police station and was subsequently arrested on suspicion of murder. He is currently receiving treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Investigators have indicated that the victim and the suspect were known to each other, and they do not believe there are any additional suspects at large.
The family of the deceased has been notified and is receiving support from specialized officers.
Detective Inspector Dean Grice, who is overseeing the investigation, remarked, „This is a deeply tragic incident, and our thoughts remain firmly with the victim’s family during this difficult time.“ He emphasized the swift response of officers and their collaboration with ambulance services to provide immediate care.
Grice further noted, „A prompt and coordinated investigation has now been launched to establish the full circumstances, and specialist officers are continuing to support the family throughout.“
Detective Superintendent James Derham, who oversees policing in the area, stated, „At this stage, we believe that this was an isolated incident and I want to reassure the community that there is no wider risk to the public.“ He acknowledged the significant impact such a crime has on the community.
Derham also assured residents that they can expect to see an increased police presence in the vicinity. He encouraged locals to share any concerns with officers on duty or to contact the police at 101.
